ICYMI: Meghan Markle Was Slammed By Her Half-Bother In An Open Letter For Prince Harry

Prince Henry of Wales, or more popularly known as Prince Harry, and his fiancée, Hollywood actress Meghan Markle, have been making the world obsessed with their fairytale-like romance since they got together in 2016. Their story after all is really interesting—she is a mixed-race woman with African-American and Caucasian ancestries who has made a name for herself in the US entertainment industry, while he is UK’s modern-day playful prince and son of the well-loved People’s Princess, Lady Diana. Since the couple’s royal engagement in November 2017, the world has grown curious in the "mixed" woman who finally captured the prince’s heart. This love story is almost dreamy and perfect—until the future royal bride has been called “the biggest mistake in royal wedding history" by her very own brother. How have her issues with her family become this nasty?

Thomas “Tom” Markle Jr., Meghan’s half-brother from her dad’s first marriage, penned an open letter to Prince Harry published in InTouch magazine three weeks before the royal wedding, urging the royal groom to cancel the wedding of the year with the "jaded, shallow, conceited woman that will make a joke of you and the royal family heritage."

He went on to claim that his half-sister disowned their father after he went bankrupt trying to pay off Meghan’s debts. Thomas Sr. has declared bankruptcy in 2017 and has been based in Mexico.

Tom Jr. was 14 years old when Meghan was born in 1981. He was then living with his dad Thomas Markle Sr., an Emmy-awarded lighting director in California, his sister Samantha, and his dad’s second wife and his stepmother Doria Loyce Ragland, who is Meghan’s mother. Thomas Sr. and Doria eventually got divorced, too, when Meghan turned six.

In an interview with InTouch magazine, Tom, 51, shared that he was last in touch with his sister in 2011, before she was tapped as Rachel Zane in the hit American legal-drama series Suits. Tom said that they would hang out every other weekend from 2009- 2011, as they’re taking care of their grandmother stricken by dementia.

Tom recalls, “She was great with her. Meg would read to her all time. We were so close back then, but when our grandmother died, she moved to Toronto to start filming Suits and I didn’t see her. I haven’t seen her since late 2011.”

Meghan went on to star in Suits for seven seasons from 2011 to 2018. Although the siblings did not hang out that much anymore during those years, no feud between them had been reported.

In October 2016, media outlets started reporting that Meghan has been dating Prince Harry. She met the prince in July 2016 through a blind date orchestrated by the couple’s common friend. It blew up out of proportion as the world’s curiosity about the actress grew, so much so that her family members, including Tom Jr.,  were dragged “under the microscope” by the paparazzi trying to get dirt about the prince’s new love interest. This prompted Tom Jr. to ask from the British Palace for assistance in dealing with international scrutiny brought by being a relative of Prince Harry’s then-girlfriend.

"My lawyer had a phone meeting with her (Meghan’s) lawyer, and he emailed me some of [Meghan’s] direct words. She said, ‘That’s distant family and I don’t know those people.’ That’s pretty harsh," Tom told In Touch, calling her statements "a slap in the face" and "below the belt."

Tom shared that he’s lost work and has had to move three times because of all the interest in Meghan. “There was a time where people were following me around at work, taking pictures and posting horrible stories about me and my family saying I’m a white supremacist, a drug addict and a dealer, all this crap that just isn’t true,” he explains.

"My attorney was reaching out to her people and the palace to basically [help us] try to get a retraction for all these false stories in [countries] where there are different laws," he sharees with In Touch. But allegedly, despite his lawyer’s pleas for the palace to “take some action to protect him,” there were emails that supposedly show that a rep from Prince Harry’s office simply told him: “I am so sorry to hear you have been having a tough time with the media." Tom iss ssaid to have tried re-establishing contact with Meghan a number of times by emailing the Buckingham Palace, but to no avail. “It has been completely ignored. They did not even acknowledge its receipt. That whole thing is hurtful,” he says.

He apparently tried to pass a message to Meghan through her lawyer instead, too, writing:

“Dear Meg,

First thing I want to say is congratulations on your wedding engagement. And I’m so proud of you, you’re awesome. Next thing is that I’m truly sorry that my personal life may have caused you any embarrassment, never my intentions whatsoever. I’ve only ever tried to silence Vonnie from the start. Those tabloid mags, reporters and articles are sick. Untrue. I’ve had enough difficulty starting life over in Grant’s Pass as it is, with no luck. Truly, I don’t want to be in the papers or media again, just want to move to a country and start my animal rescue farm and do what I love for the rest of my life. I wish you and Harry all the best. You guys look amazing and happy together.

Tom Markle Jr.

Love you Meg.”

He finds it "ridiculous” that they never hear from Meghan, and that he feels like she thinks of him as a stranger. "I spent a lot of time with her growing up," Tom explains. “Maybe the normal American family she has is embarrassing to her. She’s clearly forgotten her roots." Thomas fears a drunken altercation in Oregon in early 2017 with his fiancé Darlene Blount, 37, might be to blame for Meghan not contacting him. He is also particularly distraught as he released statements in Meghan’s defense after she came under attack from their sister Samantha, who had also accused the actress of turning her back on her family.

Samantha, 53,  has been aggressive about her tirade against the royal fiancé, more so when Prince Harry himself commented in the special edition of Radio 4’s Today program following Meghan’s first Christmas with the royal family, saying, “She’s done an absolutely amazing job, she’s getting in there and it’s the family that I suppose she’s never had.”

Samantha responded via Twitter, “Actually she has a large family who were always there with her and for her. Our household was very normal and when dad and Doria divorced, we all made it so it was like she had two houses. No one was estranged, she was just too busy. Read my book complete with facts and photos,” Samantha says that she’d call the book The Diary of Princess Pushy’s Sister.

All hell broke loose when it was reported that Tom Jr. and Samantha did not receive any invite to the royal wedding on May 19. Samantha was reportedly upset that a thousand strangers are invited to the royal wedding but the siblings seem to not have made it to the guest list.

In the handwritten letter released by Tom  Jr. through InTouch magazine, he tries to tell Prince Harry that “it’s not too late” to not marry his sister.

He wrote, "Not to mention, to top it all off, she doesn’t invite her own family and instead invites complete strangers to the wedding. Who does that? You and the royal family should put an end to this fake fairytale wedding before it’s too late." Tom concludes his letter with, "Also you would think that a royal wedding would bring a torn family closer together, but I guess we are all distant family to Meg."

Tom also reiterated that Meghan’s personal debts made their dad went bankrupt, saying, “What kind of person starts out by using her own father until he’s bankrupt, then forgets about him in Mexico, leaving him broke, over mostly all her debts. And when it’s time to pay him back, she forgets her own father like she never knew him? My father will never recover financially from paying Meghan’s way, nor emotionally from disowning him. Meg is showing her true colors.”

Despite Tom Jr.’s claims, it has been recently confirmed by the Kensington Palace that Meghan Markle's father will walk her down the aisle when she marries Prince Harry at St George’s chapel in Windsor Castle on May 19. Thomas Markle Sr.  will meet his daughter's fiancé for the first time when he arrives in the UK the week before the wedding. He and Meghan's mother, Doria Ragland, will meet the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh. They will also meet Prince Charles, as well as Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Meanwhile, Meghan will not have a maid of honor and all of her bridesmaids and pageboys will be children. She "has a very close-knit group of friends and did not want to choose between them," Kensington Palace's communications secretary Jason Knauf says.
