Nipple Gels, Daytime Naps, And Other Tips From #MetroMom Mikaela Lagdameo-Martinez
"Being a mom completed me.”
Mikaela Lagdameo-Martinez was 19 when she first gave birth to her eldest daughter, Noelle. And in her 15 years of being a mom, Mikaela shares that there’s no better feeling, nothing more fulfilling in the world than raising and being with her three children.
Metro Channel dropped by Mikaela’s wonderful home for the new Metro Mom TV show, where she shared what it's like to be a full-time mom.
"Being a mom completed me." What a beautiful way to describe being a mother! Share the feels and the challenges of motherhood with Mikaela Lagdameo-Martinez (@mikaelamartinez) in the season premiere of Metro Moms, this Mother's Day, May 12 at 12:30 p.m. only on Metro Channel. What's your #MetroMom story?
“Being a mom, being a wife completed me. There was a reason for working, there was a reason to be happy. There’s a reason for everything. You’re never alone. It’s like you have a support system. You have someone to hug at night, children who look up to you for little and big things,” Mikaela shares.
And to Mikaela, every single day with her kids is the best day. In fact, she starts her day with her youngest son, Maxen knocking on her door to wake her up and lie down with her. They would then have breakfast, and she would watch him throw some hoops—something that Maxen and his dad Chucho loves doing together.
Her second, Tyler, is now 10 years old, and she says that he is actually the sweetest to her out of the three. “There’s something about moms and sons,” she says.
And with her eldest, Noelle, who is turning 15, it’s so much easier and more fun now since Mikaela can bond with her and depend on her as the ate to the two. “It’s really fun to have a teen because it’s like you have a sister. We have the same shoe size and clothing size, and we love to travel together, mother-and-daughter trips. It’s just us, shopping, doing girly stuff.”
With 15 years of experience in her belt, it feels like Mikaela has gone through and overcame them all. So we ask her for a couple of tips to share for first-time moms and dads, and parents who need some wisdom and guidance in their family.
How important is breastfeeding?
On her blog, MikaelaMartinez.com, Mikaela recalls that she breastfed her kids for 10 months exclusively. And that means no formula at all. While there may be painful moments and hassle moments, she says that it’s so worth it because they rarely got sick.
It may be a little traumatic, because most moms have breastfeeding horror stories, but Mikaela says that being well informed beforehand is always better so you’re prepared. She recommends using nipple gels once a day before going to bed to relieve the pain of breastfeeding.

How do you deal with sleepless nights?
Your baby’s first six months is going to be crazy. Mikaela recalls one night with Maxen when she and her husband had zero sleep, literally, up to 5 a.m. because their son wouldn’t sleep because of kabag.
There’s no shortcut to skipping these sleepless nights. That’s why Mikaela recommends that when the child takes naps during the day, take those naps, too.
What’s a parenting style that works?
“For me, raising my kids is quite different because I have a teen and how I handle her is different with how I handle the two. But what I realized is that communication is so important. You have to talk to them like adults and teach them how to make decisions for themselves and not only rely on 'Mom, you decide.' Even in the simple things. Because later on, as they grow older, it gives them the confidence to make decisions and not just rely on what people want,” Mikaela shares. "There’s no perfect mom and there’s no manual. How to raise a child is up to you. If you feel like this is what works for you, go for it. You don’t have to follow other moms who are doing this just because the society says so.”
