Metro Society x Metro.Style's Most Influential On Social Media
The digital landscape has changed dramatically over the decades. What used to be a mere source of information has now shifted to become a tool for communication, self-expression, and even establishing connections.
The Internet today is largely defined by social media. Most people, if not all, maintain at least one social media account no longer as a luxury but, in fact, a necessity. The daily use of Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and other digital platforms has been ingrained in the lifestyle of people, especially Filipinos.
According to a report on ABS-CBN News, “An average Filipino user spends almost four hours on different platforms daily.” The said article, which was based on a report by creative agency We Are Social and social media management platform Hootsuite, further revealed that “for the third year in a row, the Philippines emerged as the country that spent most time on social media.”
From a global perspective, there are now 4.021 billion Internet users worldwide as of January 2018—that’s more than half of the global population (53 percent)! And the figure keeps on growing, as the number of Internet users grew by 248 million (7 percent) since January 2017.
Add to these, ABS-CBN News also reported that “more than half of Internet users (42 percent) or around 3.2 billion are active on social media with 9 in 10 of those users accessing their chosen platforms via mobile devices.” Because of these handy gadgets, social media has now become the number one medium for accessing news and other information.
There is no denying the power of social media and the famous individuals who use it when it comes to dictating the trends, influencing the public’s opinion, and shaping the life beyond cyberspace.
