She's a women's rights activist.
The assumption is that all women on the Miss Universe stage are pro-women's rights and stand for gender equality, but that might only stand true in theory. For Andrea Meza, however, she lives this truth in very concrete ways in her own life. First, she's a software engineer and she chose this career path not only because it interested her, but because she wanted to show women that she could succeed in a male-dominated industry. Second, she works with international organization Municipal Institute for Women, which in Mexico, helps protect and promote the rights of women in political, cultural, economic, and social contexts.
She's a business owner.
Andrea Meza launched her own line of active wear in 2020, and we're hoping to see more of that come to life this year now that she has a lot more influence. The move was in line with her second biggest advocacy: body positivity. She's against the idea of shoving women into a single, unrealistic mold of attractiveness and instead, encourages a better way to look and feel's one's best - through a healthy lifestyle that includes lots of physical activity.
She's vegan.
Going vegan wasn't just something she did for fitness. Rather, she became so affected when she learned about how human consumption of animal products contributed to the rapid deterioration of the environment that she made the big commitment to go vegan as soon as she can so she could do more to help save the planet in her own way.
She's against all forms of violence.
In case you missed it, Mexico made it to the headlines so often in 2020 due to a spike in cases of violence against women. It became so bad that crimes against women were being carried out in broad daylight and in highly urbanized areas, prompting women to feel unsafe to be out and about (or even at home) by themselves. Mexican women vehemently pushed back against this, pleading the government to take action and taking to the streets themselves to protest. Andrea Meza publicly supported this cause and eventually expanded her views to include all kinds of violence, including fighting back against cyberbullying and online hate speech.
She's big on family.
Mexicans and Filipinos are so alike in many ways, but one of our most beautiful similarities has to be how both nationalities are incredibly family-oriented. Big, close-knit families are just as common in Mexico as they are in the Philippines, and for Andrea Meza, she couldn't be prouder to share the fact that she's got 40 cousins all in all, plus two sisters.
She's from a colorful, but not often visited, region in Mexico.
Andrea Meza isn't from Mexico city; she's from Chihuahua City, located in the region of Chihuahua. She laughs at how silly that might sound to foreigners who associate the name to the small, scrappy dog breed, but she's also glad to talk about what makes this part of Mexico so great. In fact, she's a tourism ambassador for the region who often shows off all the things that visitors can enjoy when they come over on her Instagram feed.
She's an awesome mix of sporty and glam.
We might know her as a beauty queen for the most part, but in reality, Andrea Meza is a pretty outdoorsy, sporty gal. She's not all gowns, photo shoots, and glam (although she is also a makeup artist on the side), and she loves extreme sports and time under the sun just as much. Her favorite things to do? Sandboarding and rappelling, plus football and lots of swimming, too!
