In Photos: Meet The Miss Universe Philippines 2020 Candidates

They want the crown—but not as much as they want to show girls and women that confidence comes in many shapes, ages, and colors

"My advice to the girls is just to be proud of where they came from," said Shamcey Supsup-Leenational director of the freshly formed Miss Universe Philippines and a former Miss Universe contender herself—when asked by ABS-CBN News what she would like to tell the new batch of Filipinas vying for the pageant world's most coveted title.

This woman in charge emphasized that under her leadership, Miss Universe Philippines candidates will be encouraged to embrace their realness, the many facets of their identities, the reasons that make them, them.

Pageant aficionados can expect to see a different kind of Pinay walking the runway and waving to adoring fans this year; candidates represent the diversity of Filipinas, be it with their skin tone, body structure, profession, or advocacy.

Miss Universe Philippines Organization took over the responsibility of crowning the Miss Universe Philippines representative from Stella Marquez-Araneta's Binibining Pilipinas Charities Inc. (BBCPI)  in December 2019.

BBCPI will still be in charge of naming the Philippines' representatives to other pageants including Miss International, Miss Intercontinental, Miss Supranational, Miss Globe, and Miss Grand International. BBCPI's last Miss Universe candidate was Gazini Ganados, the Cebu-based stunner who made it to the Top 20 in last year's Miss Universe competition.

The first-ever Miss Universe Philippines competition will be held on May 3, Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
