Personalities Mourn the Passing of Theater Giant Floy Quintos

The entertainment pillar and then-Metro Managing Editor passed away at 63

Renowned stage director and award-winning playwright Floy Quintos passed away last Saturday, April 27, at 63 years old. On Facebook, his family announced the heartbreaking news.

“It is with the heaviest of hearts that I, on behalf of my family, announce that Floy Quintos, esteemed playwright and director, but more importantly beloved brother, son, uncle, cousin, nephew, and friend, has returned to the arms of the Lord,” his niece Celina Quintos wrote in the post. “He passed suddenly in the ER from a heart attack this morning.”

“We ask for your prayers, love, and support as we navigate this tremendous loss,” she said.

Direk Floy was a heavily decorated author who received multiple Palanca awards throughout his professional track. He penned “The Kundiman Party,” “Angry Christ,” “The Reconciliation Dinner,” “Evening at the Opera, “Fluid,” “Collection,” “Suor Clara,” among others. As a screenwriter, meanwhile, his body of work involves Koronang Itim, Waiting, and Darna: Ang Pagbabalik. However, his latest theater production, “Grace,” is slated to be staged in May.

A beacon of theater and the arts, Direk Floy was a great loss to the industry. Notable entertainment personalities and organizations mourn his sudden passing, and his friends and colleagues were deeply saddened, too.

Pinky Amador, for one, took to social media to thank the late visionary for his remarkable support.

Metro Manila Film Festival 2024 Best Actor Cedrick Juan, meanwhile, shared some snaps of his conversations with Direk Floy, and described his unexpected departure as “nakakahinayang.”

Singer-songwriter Jed Madela, on other hand, is still shocked by Floy’s demise. He posted a clip on Facebook showing his memorable encounters with the director.

Film producer Noel Ferrer also invited industry friends to memorialize the legacy of the man.

Theater actress Gab Pangilinan was heartbroken, too, for not having “enough time” with Direk Floy.

Dulaang Unibersidad ng Pilipinas and Ateneo University Press condoled with Direk Floy’s family, too.

Floy Quintos was then the Managing Editor of Metro: The City Life. He is the creative genius behind some of Metro’s shoots, where he produced sold-out covers like that of Dawn Zulueta and Gretchen Barretto, and styled acclaimed Filipino personalities such as chef Margarita Forés, business magnate Iñigo Zobel, and veteran actress Dina Bonnevie. Here, he also used to work and collaborate with late Filipino writer Larry J. Cruz, fashion designer Inno Sotto, and legendary lensman Jun de Leon
