FotomotoPH—a collective of photographers, curators and writers—promotes Philippine photography by mounting exhibitions, organizing public programs, and projects with art spaces across the archipelago. As the lead curator of Art Fair Philippines 2024’s Photo section, FotomotoPH sees a change and development in the direction of contemporary photography in the country. This year, the sole exhibitor for the ArtFairPH/Photo section is FotomotoPH.

“To represent photography in the Art Fair is very important because photography is a fast-growing sector in the contemporary art scene. It’s all the more important because we represent not only the number of Filipino photographers we have in the country, but the potential of opening dialogues with different people whose professions are aligned with the medium of photography.”

According to Sandra, FotomotoPH also represents a range of creatives who collaborate with photographers or work with photography and can cover publishers who produce photography books and prints, archivists, and other artists whose processes involve photography.

As FotomotoPH co-founder and Art Fair Philippines curator, Sandra walked us through her work as a creative and arts connoisseur. “Curating is not necessarily all creative and there were certain parameters I had to work with. Among them is to gather artworks from an early period of an artist’s practice. Another is to consider photography that works in different types of media imaginable,” she told Metro.Style.

“We, [at FotomotoPH], represent the possibilities an artist can bring to the practice of photography within this very digital era,” Sandra continued, crediting her fellow founders Neal Oshima and Stephanie Frondoso for taking charge of the exhibit’s roster of artists and final hang.

“As part of Fotomoto, we were particularly excited to work with Art Fair because our discussion with them has been very open-ended over the years,” Sandra reiterated. “The collective has grown in the past three years since we first launched our open call program. We have learned a lot from working with different art spaces, organizations, and schools, and I think Fotomoto is confident in its role to lead photography enthusiasts.”

Since the foundation of the AFP Photo section in 2018, a special exhibition space for photography projects, Art Fair Philippines has seen a significant representation of the discipline and renowned lensmen. Last year, FotomotoPH founders were gathered at the fair in separate booths and this 2024, they are taking part as one unified voice to represent the best in Philippine contemporary photography.

“I think [it is] very natural for Fotomoto to present itself as a veritable platform for Philippine photography with Art Fair Philippines this year since we’ve consolidated the collective as an organization, and we’re really glad to share the Art Fair’s mission,” Sandra notes.

Evoking emotions and realizations among its audience is the real prize of photography, too. Moments taken under the lens usually take us to another time or memory, immortalizing momentary scenes and spaces. “It’s important that the visitors understand how photography is not as easy as it looks, and it doesn’t just stop at the image that was taken,” Sandra emphasized.

“It continues after the photographer’s genius in the hands of a print, a book, a screenshot. Perhaps it lives in other types of work that we don’t look for images in. Photography is perhaps the before and the after of the click of a shutter,” she concluded.

As to whose creations Sandra looks forward to seeing at Art Fair Philippines 2024, there are several artists among her circle that came to mind. She awaits the pieces of her Fotomoto co-founders apart from works by photographers Nana Buxani, Frank Callaghan, Geloy Concepcion, and Denise Weldon, artists MM YU, Kawayan de Guia and James Clar, an unknown photographer who goes by the initials V.B. and photographs by National Artists BenCab and Arturo Luz. Of course, celebrity photographer Mark Nicdao is participating as well, and Sandra cannot wait to catch sight of the massive piece he will put up.

“I’m super excited to see how the biggest work we have of Mark Nicdao will hang in the booth,” Sandra teased. “He’s worked on an old image that has been reformatted and printed on a very unusual substrate.”
