The Winners Of Miss Universe 2021's Special Awards
The national costume that won was created by a Filipino fashion designer
There's a new queen in the universe: Harnaaz Sandhu of India! But before Mexico's Andrea Meza crowned her successor, other queens were given special awards at Miss Universe 2021, which held its coronation night on December 12 in Eilat, Israel.
The 70th Miss Universe had a preliminary competition and national costume show last December 10. The 80 candidates also participated in various pre-pageant activities.
The special awards were given to the following:
Spirit of Carnival Award: Chantel O'Brian of Bahamas, an etiquette coach
Christine Duffy, the president of Carnival Cruise Lines, explained the award: "The Spirit of Carnival Award is presented to the delegate who embodies Carnival Cruise Lines' values of fun, friendship, diversity, and inclusion... Chantel's passion for childhood education and mentorship led her to co-found The Leading Ladies Project, an organization prioritizing the education of underprivileged girls."
Impact Wave Award: Antonia Figueroa of Chile, an environmental engineer
Host Carson Kressley explained the award, saying, "[It's] given to the contestant who made the biggest splash for social good using the ImpactWayv app, a social networking platform that enables users to share social impact on a global scale." (She received $10,000 to donate to charity)
Best in National Costume: Maristella Okpala of Nigeria, a dental technician
Her national costume was inspired by a famous traditional masquerade of the southeastern tribe of Nigeria called "Mmanwa." Of this costume, Miss Universe - Nigeria shared: "I picked this particular costume because I see a self reflection of my cause in this Mmanwa who protects children and women against any form of abuse." The costume was created by Filipino fashion designer Kennedy Jhon Gasper, who's beyond thrilled to be recognized now on his second time to create a costume for Miss Universe; the first time he designed a national costume for the pageant was for Cameroon’s Miss Universe 2020 representative Angele Kossinda.
Our queen, Miss Universe Philippines 2021 Beatrice Luigi Gomez, made it to the Top 5. She also wowed and impressed many in her evening gowns by Francis Libiran both at the preliminary competition and coronation night as well as her Bakunawa: The Golden Lunar Dragon national costume by Axel Que and Manny Halasan.
