Janella Salvador And Elmo Magalona Learn Surfing For The First Time At Sorsogon

As an archipelago, Philippines is home to many surfing spots. This is why many take this opportunity to learn surfing or try and utilize it as something to develop their place.

Gubat, Sorsogon is a municipality that lies near the waters. And Gubat has become the home to surfing enthusiasts, both local residents and foreign tourists. This is also where the Lola Sayong Eco-Surf Camp was born; it's a group of locals who teach and promote eco-surfing. On-screen loveteam Janella Salvador and Elmo Magalona visit their place to know their story, and try out surfing for the first time for Gina Lopez's G-Diaries.

At the heart of Lola Sayong Eco-Surf Camp is Lola Sayong, who first encouraged the local surfers to set up their home in the area. Many of the surfing instructors included in the camp are locals who are using their earnings to subsidize their studies. This is why their motto is: “No school, no surf.”

Since then, the camp has started to grow and has attracted local and foreign tourists. One of the regulars at the camp is Julie Poisson, a French national who often goes back to Gubat to surf. She also teaches Janella yoga to warm up before their surf.

“We always go back here because we love this place and we love the people here, we love what they do, and how they manage this place,” says Julie. Before the “surf day” starts, the locals come to the beach to pick up trash that has been washed to the shore. This also serves as their warm-up before they start surfing.

Waves could be small or huge, depending on the weather. And Janella and Elmo had to learn surfing on a day when the waves are bigger, hence, it’s harder to balance. But the duo had such a blast, especially Janella who was trying on surfing for the very first time.

Apart from the good food, the good waves, and the great location, the heart of Lola Sayong Eco-Surf Camp lies in its locals who make sure that their place is beautiful and clean.

“It started from scratch pero nakikita mo ’yung drive nila and ’yung passion nila para mapaganda ’yung lugar nila. If you just think about it, kung saan tayo nakatira, dapat tayo rin ’yung nag-aalaga sa place na ’yun, eh. Kasi ''pag mahal mo ’yung isang bagay, gusto mong alagaan ’yun. Nakita ko talaga how much they love this place, how much it is very dear to them,” Elmo shares.

“Kasi ’yun ’yung maganda sa lugar na ’to, wala kang makikitang basura at kung may makita man sila, talagang pupulutin nila. ’Yung mga tao sa Manila sana matuto sila na mas maging malinis, mas maging aware kung saan itatapon ’yung basura nila,” Janella adds.
