As market demands changed after COVID-19, communities became more conscious of a healthy lifestyle. “That has also encouraged us to shift a little bit from just being a purely curative facility to one that promotes preventive medicine and a healthy lifestyle. Dr. Espiritu shares, “If a patient feels better about their appearance, they become more motivated to exercise and do well. Combining these preventive approaches while giving patients numbers and data helps because data motivates the patient.”</p><p>This influences patients to be more proactive. They seek care earlier, they monitor their health more closely, and they adopt healthier habits. Testing is simple. For DNA tests like nutrition and pharmacogenomics, it’s just a throat or mouth swab. We just get your saliva, that’s it. No preparations needed.”</p><p>For the &quot;<strong>True Age</strong>&quot; test, which determines your biological age, all that is needed is a small drop of blood from a pin prick. Dr. Flores expounds, “Even among siblings, it’s different. One twin can be eating a lot of carbohydrates and yet remain lean, while the other twin, seemingly eating the same thing, can become overweight. By doing this test, you’ll be able to determine that kind of expression.”</p><p>“When we talk about aging, our age is always pegged on the risk of someone getting a disease. But it doesn’t explain why younger people, in their 30s and 40s, get the same thing: Heart disease, diabetes, and even cancer.” The biological age test determines a cell’s true age and how it functions, regardless of your birthday, depending on what you expose it to. There is no ideal age for when to have this test done. Dr. Flores suggested, “The earlier you do it, the better the dashboard of your health is. And more than that, if you know the issue, you can do something about it.”</p><div><br/></div><div><span class="fr-img-caption fr-fic fr-dib fr-rounded" style="width:700px;display:block" width="700"><span class="fr-img-wrap"><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1770881727003TMCSL 12.jpg" style="width:700px" class="fr-fic fr-dib fr-rounded" width="700"/><span class="fr-inner">Advanced testing allows visibility of your metabolism of certain drugs</span></span></span></div><p>The DNA test also assesses how your body metabolizes certain drugs: whether they are effective, ineffective, or cause side effects. Dr. Flores reiterates, “It gives you and the clinician, your doctor, a better understanding of what exactly to give you for a particular indication if the need arises. And it tests for 200 drugs or more. You only need to do this once in your lifetime. It gives you your lifetime’s blueprint for nutrition and pharmacotherapy effects.”</p><div><br/></div><div><strong>The Early Warning System: Introducing Spot MAS</strong></div><p>Edu opens the next segment with a discussion about TMC’s, SPOT-MAS services. Once again, Dr. Christian J. Flores walks us through how this simple test works.” Dr. Flores says, “A SPOT-MAS is a kind of screening test we use to do early detection for certain cancers. It’s a blood test to test for 10 organs at risk for cancer.&quot;</p><div><br/></div><div><span class="fr-img-caption fr-fic fr-dib fr-rounded" style="width:700px;display:block" width="700"><span class="fr-img-wrap"><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1770881670425TMCSL 13.jpg" style="width:700px" class="fr-fic fr-dib fr-rounded" width="700"/><span class="fr-inner">“A SPOT MAS is a kind of screening test we use to do early detection for certain cancers. It’s a blood test to test for 10 organs at risk for cancer.&quot;</span></span></span></div><p>He adds, “Some of these organs are common: colon, the lung, the breast. But a lot of the other organs, like the pancreas, ovary, endometrium, head and neck, liver, and stomach, we don’t have protocols for screening those tests. This test detects DNA fragments from those 10 organs in your blood in one testing procedure. One blood draw can do all that.”</p><p>“Cancer is a big issue, and most of the time, at least here in Asia, it’s diagnosed very late. The effect of diagnosing cancer late is multifold: The effect on the body of the patient, the effect on the family, the mental health issues, and the stress as well,” shares Dr. Flores. By doing early cancer screening, you’ll be able to prevent all those things.</p><p>Dr. Flores suggests this be done in combination with other gold-standard tests, like a colonoscopy. “This tool can be an additional arsenal in your war against cancer. Historically, there is little arsenal in terms of screening.”</p><p>He closes with, “The point here is early [detection] so that we can manage all these things much better and prevent all the things that were mentioned earlier: the stress of having treatment, the downtime, the expenses, and the quality of life.”</p><p>The episode closes with Edu leaving the audience with this thought: “Health is not a destination, it is a precious journey. Invest in yourself. Invest in peace of mind.
