Why Gen Z Favors Caffeine Over Alcohol

<p>For years, socializing carried an implicit invitation: <strong>get a drink and get drunk.</strong></p><p>First dates unfolded over cocktails, Friday nights ended at bars, and celebrations generally required that a bottle be popped somewhere in the background. Alcohol wasn’t just something that people drank; it was an integral part of going out.</p><div><br/></div><div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1786690027173Drinking Alcohol.jpg" style="width:700px" class="fr-fic fr-dib fr-rounded"/></div><div><br/></div><p>Now, Gen Z is starting to loosen that association.</p><p>It is not that young people no longer crave nightlife, indulgence, or a reason to linger. If anything, what young people want even more than ever before is <strong>a place to be, something to drink, and a reason to stay there for a little while longer.</strong> The only thing that has changed is what the drink of choice is.</p><p>Increasingly, that drink is now <strong>coffee.</strong></p><div><br/></div><div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1786690371737Gen Z Drinking Coffee.jpg" style="width:700px" class="fr-fic fr-dib fr-rounded"/></div><div><br/></div><div><strong>A different kind of hangout </strong></div><p>With the rise of <strong>sober curiosity</strong>, drinking is perceived more as a conscious choice rather than as a social default. Younger drinkers are increasingly <a href="https://theconversation.com/the-rise-of-sober-curiosity-why-gen-zers-are-reducing-their-alcohol-consumption-243775" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">reassessing alcohol’s place in their lives instead of accepting it as an automatic part of going out.</a></p><p>Some do not drink at all, while others drink sparingly, or only when they genuinely feel like it. Either way, the stereotype that a social life should necessarily involve drinking is now much easier to challenge.</p><p>The figures reflect that shift. According to some results, <a href="https://news.gallup.com/poll/693362/drinking-rate-new-low-alcohol-concerns-surge.aspx" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">only 50 percent of American adults between the ages of 18 and 34 reported that they drink alcohol, while 59 percent expressed similar thoughts in 2023</a>.  Moreover, younger adults saw moderate consumption of alcohol as a risk factor for their well-being. The same trends have been seen in other <a href="https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/why-gen-z-drinks-less-192439244.html" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">research</a> as well, where a substantial number of Gen Zs have been actively working on reducing their alcohol consumption.</p><div><br/></div><div><span class="fr-img-caption fr-fic fr-dib fr-rounded" style="width:700px;display:block" width="700"><span class="fr-img-wrap"><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1786690649198Gen Z Coffee.jpg" style="width:700px" class="fr-fic fr-dib fr-rounded" width="700"/><span class="fr-inner">Gen Z has been brought up in a culture where wellness is practically a second language.</span></span></span></div><p>This shift makes sense considering the overall attitude of Gen Z towards wellness. Sleep, fitness, mental health, skincare, productivity, and recovery—all of these are part of the routine conversation nowadays. In this context, a hangover, something that was once considered an acceptable consequence of a great night out, seems to be less and less compatible with the way of life centered on feeling great on the following day.</p><p>But data only paints half the picture. <strong>Gen Z has been brought up in a culture where wellness is practically a second language.</strong> Sleep is tracked. Steps are counted. Workout classes are pre-booked. Morning routines are recorded. Losing an entire Sunday to a Saturday night hangover can start to feel less romantic than it once did.</p><p>After all, it is not easy to commit to your 9 a.m. Pilates class while bargaining with last night’s martinis.</p><div><strong><br/></strong></div><div><strong>So, we met for coffee instead</strong></div><p>If alcohol is becoming less of a default, something else needs to refill the glass. Cue the caffeine.</p><p>Drinking coffee was always a social activity, but now it’s evolving into much more than that. <strong>A coffee meeting doesn’t feel like an interim solution anymore; it is a real plan. There are coffee crawls, post-gym matcha runs, new specialty coffees to try, and drinks that are so fancy that they may as well take some inspiration from cocktails.</strong></p><p>It&#x27;s convenient because coffee offers the reason to get together without expecting more of the day than that. It allows indulgence and not interruption. We still need to hold something in our hands when we chat. We still need an excuse to stay for one more hour. The social aspect of the drink was never lost—it just changed what was in the cup.</p><p>Caffeine has also moved beyond the everyday latte, being found in <a href="https://www.dazeddigital.com/life-culture/article/70422/1/how-caffeine-became-gen-z-drug-of-choice-sober-curious-wellness-drink-pouches" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">energy drinks, pills, patches, and pouches focused on concentration, fitness, and productivity.</a> <strong>Alcohol offered escapism. Caffeine offers momentum.</strong></p><p>For a generation that prefers their vices in conjunction with some optimization, one of the two was always bound to be more appealing.</p><div><strong><br/></strong></div><div><strong>Then the DJ turned it up</strong></div><p>Perhaps the best indicator that coffee culture is transitioning into nightlife is the <strong>coffee rave.</strong></p><p>Picture yourself with a DJ, dancers, and the usual thrill of going out. Strip away the darkness of the room and the vodka sodas. Throw in some espresso. It seems to be a somewhat ridiculous concept until one realizes that the alcohol might not have been the key ingredient to begin with.</p><div><br/></div><div><span class="fr-img-caption fr-fic fr-dib fr-rounded" style="width:700px;display:block" width="700"><span class="fr-img-wrap"><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1786691786899Gen Z Drinking Coffee 2.jpg" style="width:700px" class="fr-fic fr-dib fr-rounded" width="700"/><span class="fr-inner">he coffee rave captures all of that without the expectation of intoxication being necessary to get in the door.</span></span></span></div><p>The joy of nightlife has always been embedded within the ritual itself—dressing up, hanging out with friends, listening to loud music, picking up on flirtations from those across the room, briefly forgetting that anything else exists but what is happening right now. Coffee-clubbing events have increased by 478 percent, along with attendance increasing by 150 percent, which is part of a broader “soft clubbing” trend.</p><p>All of a sudden, dancing at four in the afternoon doesn’t seem like a second-rate version of partying. It is a whole new world of its own.</p><div><strong><br/></strong></div><div><strong>This new vice has better PR</strong></div><p>There is, however, one inconvenient detail: <strong>caffeine is still caffeine. </strong>While its health-associated packaging may give it the appearance of being a harmless ingredient, excessive intake can result in increased nervousness, insomnia, headaches, and agitation.</p><p>As caffeine continues to make its way into ever-concentrated beverages, powders, shots, and packets, the paradox is hard to miss. Perhaps we&#x27;ve substituted one socially acceptable drug for another—albeit one that comes in more appealing packaging. But then again, maybe that wasn’t the whole point of sober curiosity anyway. Rather, it was meant to encourage <strong>deliberation, mindfulness, and intentionality.</strong></p><p>Do I actually want another drink? Do I really want to stay until two? Do we need alcohol to go out? For Gen Z, at least, the answer appears increasingly clear: no.</p><p>The cocktail will not be going anywhere anytime soon, nor does it deserve to. However, it no longer holds the monopoly on the party list. Sometimes you need wine. Other times you need an iced matcha, a DJ spinning before sundown, and being home early enough to recall everything that happened.</p><p>Perhaps the sober life is not one of having less fun.</p><p>Perhaps it is about finally deciding what fun looks like for yourself.</p>
