Rockwell Atletica And Electric Studio Stage An Outdoor Ride To Remember
This one’s for the books! Electric Studio and Rockwell Atletica pull all the stops to make magic happen for the Manila indoor cycling community
I’ve been clipping in and pedaling away on a bike that goes nowhere for years now, but the soul-stirring, cult-esque appeal of indoor cycling never gets old. And every time someone asks me why I invest so much money on class packs or why I behave like a rabid animal foaming at the mouth when it’s time to book bikes every Monday at noon, I still struggle to come up with a satisfying answer because, well, this is something better experienced than explained.
Working out at Electric Studio is a big part of my life. Whether it’s business as usual or something cool is happening, I’m always happy to be an active participant because the community that this business has built over time is truly something special. Electric is well-known for its outdoor events; as soon as the teasers are rolled out, everyone is armed and ready with their credit cards, trigger fingers, and prayers for good luck on booking day. Last Saturday, the studio partnered up with Rockwell Atletica to stage another event at the Rockwell Tennis Court. This is Electric’s twelfth outdoor event to date as well as its second one with Rockwell.
Four instructor team-ups, each with their own teaching styles and music selections, brought their A-game to the stage. I signed up for the last ride of the night, so I had the liberty of going around the area, checking out the sponsor booths, and socializing with fellow riders while waiting for class. The outdoor set-up gave our friends and family a chance to experience the Electric feels—an opportunity that isn’t always available given regular in-studio rides happen behind closed doors. Some friends and I even got to support Cheeno Roque and Pia Lopa during their class because we were watching and cheering them on from the sidelines.
It was all systems go from the moment we were called over to set up our bikes and clip in for the ride. Individually, Kyo Numata and Armand Mendoza are powerhouses; together, they were a tour de force. There’s no better way to word it: the whole thing was just so, so cool. I had the time of my life out there, and I’m sure all my fellow riders and our supportive cheerleaders did, too. Despite having led several outdoor rides in the years prior, it was gratifying to know that it never gets old for these gentlemen.
“Teaching outside the studio creates an entirely new magical experience you can get from watching an awesome concert,” shares Armand, who wowed the crowd with his badass guitar riffs. “Our team and riders gave so much love, passion and energy into the event that we felt everything flow over up on stage. Getting to do this is always a dream come true.”
“It’s about bringing everyone—riders, instructors, crew, housekeeping—together,” adds Kyo. “We have a venue to connect and reconnect with people who work so hard and share the same passion for bringing this community to life. Seeing riders enjoy this experience and get excited makes us proud to the core.”
Pre-pandemic, outdoor rides were once-in-a-blue-moon—exactly once a year—events. But Electric is shifting its stance in that regard, wanting to give its community even more opportunities to simply celebrate the joys of being together. “Since Day 1, our mission has always been to change the way people perceive fitness,” says CEO and co-founder Kristina Sy. “We wanted to create a workout that you will actually be excited to do—because only then will it truly begin to transform you. Our rooftop/outdoor rides are a culmination of these one-of-a-kind experiences. With regards to raising the bar, we honestly keep pushing ourselves to always be better. We aren’t perfect, but we do our best each and every time because the community deserves nothing short of that. All these fitness experiences we create in and out of the studio only work because we have a passionate team of instructors, crew, and managers plus a fiercely passionate community that makes the Electric magic possible.”
