Day 3 focuses on gratitude

Last month, we spoke to Happiness Doctor Lia Bernardo about finding happiness and helping others harness it from within themselves. She’s an expert on self-love and psychoneurology, a drug-free alternative to traditional psychiatric and psychological practices. Psychoneurology operates on the belief that humans aren’t ill, broken, or diseased; rather, each individual human being is already perfect and whole, and they simply “lack the resources or skills needed in order to deal with their challenges,” according to Lia.


She’s talked extensively about her own journey to self-love, and courageously reveals that it’s her calling to teach it to every single person on the planet. Because of her expertise on the matter, Metro.Style asked her to envision four days of self-love, leading up to Valentine’s Day and beyond. So much of this invented holiday is focused on the material and gift-giving aspect, the capitalism that’s everywhere. “For the third day,” Lia says, “What I’d like for you to do is practice gratitude.”


“So, from the time you wake up, give yourself a hug and then tell yourself, ‘Thank you for being here.’”


How do you do it?

“Thank everything, thank the bed, thank yourself for waking up, thank that you have hot water. Just be in gratitude the whole day, and try to begin and end your day, and in between really notice how you can be grateful for everything, like we’re grateful for the air conditioning, we’re grateful that we have pretty flowers.”


How does it work?

It’s instant, as Lia will demonstrate. In our conversation, she asks me to close my eyes and think about what I’m grateful for. “It’s very immediate,” Lia says. “Gratitude is an instant game changer. I use gratitude a lot because it’s something you don’t have to think about.”


“When you’re getting worried, be grateful. The worry will disappear, almost like magic,” she adds.
