A Mom's Guide to Finding Balance Between Family and Work

Here’s a working mom’s guide to making it work at home and in the workplace!

It was a blast of a weekend last September 16, 2023 as wellness brand Trizie led “Mom of the Year,” an exclusive, intimate event for like-minded mothers. An exchange of motherhood experiences reigned supreme at the roundtable discussion, where diverse topics and difficult truths on the lives of moms like Getting Back Into Shape, Life After Pregnancy, and Nutrition for Moms and Toddlers were the centerpiece.

Nutrition coach Pat Gatus, motherhood advocate and mover Justine Correa, and general pediatrician Anj Fernando gave us insights into the issues and struggles that mothers timelessly share. Hosted by health and well-being advocate Joanne Villablanca, the wellness affair navigated the encounters of new and acquainted moms alike.

To begin with, Trizie brand manager Josh Sonza shared why “Mom of the Year” was mounted as the third installment of Trizie’s talks series. “As a tribute to the very important people in our lives and my life, we created an event especially for moms,” he said. “The main objective of this event is really to create a community—a safe space—for all the women, most especially the moms, to talk about the different issues that they are unable to talk about in the real world.”

According to Anj Fernando, embracing each season in life makes motherhood a lot easier. “As much as we want to do everything at the same time, I believe that there’s a time for everything,” she shared. “The past year, I said I will focus on my family and work slowly on my career. Next year or the next three to five years, I will set different goals for myself.”

Anj also added that being present is being able to manage the activities set for the day. “When I work, I focus so I can get things done efficiently and quickly,” she disclosed. “When I’m with my family, I give my 100% attention. I put my phone down and really connect. It’s not the quantity of time but the quality of time you spend that’s important.” Household help, moreover, is a matter of priority, too, to preserve the mental health of mothers.

Meanwhile, Pat Gatus suggested that moms should keep their cups full to feel content and keep at their A-game. “Fill your own cup by doing these things that are important to you and make you feel good, because when you do these things, you are able to become a better person, wife, and mom. You cannot pour from an empty cup,” she asserted.

“Plan out your day as much as you can and make sure to make time for yourself. [It] can be a workout, getting some quiet time, or reading a book,” Pat continued. “Find any type of movement or workout that you enjoy. It has to be fun and enjoyable for you. It could be sports or classes. Find something that is also quick and won’t take up much of your time so you are sure to be able to squeeze it in.”

As for Justine Correa, though, career is only a side hustle. Motherhood, however, makes her a star of her own. “Finding a healthy balance between work life and family as a mom can seem like such a daunting task, but remember that at work, we are replaceable; in motherhood, we are not. That realization pushes me to be excellent at work, yet fully present at home.”
