    Here's An Easy Way To Make Your Own Nut Milk

    Fancy going dairy-free but hate the taste of soy? Go for nut milk! Literally any nut, seed and even grains can be a dairy-free milk substitute! Here’s the short and sweet on making nut milk at home.

     

    1. Buy raw nuts or seeds.

    I mean unroasted, unflavoured and unsweetened. Locally, we have really good cashew and pili nuts. You can use sesame, pumpkin and sunflower seeds if you have nut allergies. Make sure to peel off the skin from the nuts if any by soaking in warm water and gently rubbing off the outer shell.

    You can opt to use Almonds, Pistachios, Macadamia and even Walnuts but they will not give you better flavour or nutrients for the pricer tag.

     

    2. Sprout.

    Soaking and sprouting seeds and nuts overnight activates and multiplies nutrients (particularly Vitamins A, B, and C), neutralizes enzyme inhibitors, and promotes the growth of digestive enzymes. It also softens the nuts/seeds which makes it easier to blend.

     

    3. Drain and rinse the soaked nuts. Blend the nuts with fresh water.

    Use 1 cup of nuts/seeds to 4 cups of water.

    4. Strain the nut milk (optional).

    If you have a high-speed blender, the pulp would hardly be noticeable. If you prefer to strain, you can use a cheese cloth, mesh-bag, or even a fine-holed strainer.

     

    5. Sweeten if desired.

    Use muscovado sugar, coconut sugar or honey.

     

    6. Chill, drink, enjoy!

    Stores up to 48 hours only in the chiller so make in small batches.

     

    How to use Nut Milk

    You can use homemade nut milk to substitute milk in most recipes—cereals, coffee, pancake batter, soups, smoothies etc. This is especially great if you haven't been able to enjoy dairy or are trying to lessen your intake of animal products.

    Homemade nut milk has a special quality that commercial nut milks don’t —most commercially available nut milk are only 1% nuts and seeds and 99% water plus flavouring. They are also devoid of nutrients and are packed with preservatives.

    Home made nut milk is easy and simple to make, more affordable, creamier, better tasting and healthier than store-bought varieties—its nuts that were even buying them in tetra packs!
