Between the blur of brushes and the hum of cameras, the Filipina makeup artist stands unshaken: thriving in the beautiful chaos, laser-focused, and exactly where she’s meant to be.

Long before she was glamming up models and celebrities, Chyla was a young artist with a paintbrush in one hand and big dreams in the other. A graduate of the University of Santo Tomas’ Fine Arts program, she traded canvases for faces and discovered a living, breathing form of art that allowed her creativity to come alive in motion.

Now leading the makeup team of Filipinxt Fashion Show, the first and only Filipino showcase recognized by the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), Chyla keeps the fire burning, championing Filipino creativity on one of the world’s most prestigious stages. Her God-led artistry has also graced some of the biggest beauty brands like Shiseido, Maybelline, and L’Oréal Paris, further cementing her place in the international beauty scene.

Away from the rush of runway lights, Chyla pays it forward as an instructor to the next generation of artists at the New York Makeup Academy where her lessons extend beyond technique to touch on passion, purpose, and the heart behind the craft.

What began as self-taught experimentation has since evolved into a burgeoning career that’s crossed borders, cultures, and countless shades of success. From hauling a carry-on kit across boroughs to creating high-impact runway looks in minutes, Chyla is standing out in a sea of creatives chasing the next big trend.

In this exclusive interview with Metro.Style, Chyla opens up about what a day in the life of a New York makeup artist truly looks like, the adrenaline of working backstage at Fashion Week, the memorable faces she’s glammed, and the faith that continues to guide her journey.

Metro.Style: What first sparked your love for makeup, and how did that passion carry you all the way to New York?

Chyla Guerrero: I’ve always been creative growing up, which led me to study arts in college at UST. For as long as I can remember, coloring, painting, and blending have always been my strengths. Right after college, I pursued design jobs, but they only lasted a few years. I realized I wasn’t built for the corporate world. I was young, with so many ideas in my mind and so many things I wanted to explore. I felt like being confined within four walls wasn’t doing me any good, especially artistically.

Over a decade ago, I worked at a TV network where I began experimenting with makeup. This was before the Instagram era, right around the time YouTube had just launched. I would recreate looks by OG beauty content creators like Kandee Johnson, Marlena Stell, and Michelle Phan. I’d show up to work with smokey green eyes, glitter lashes, or purple lips. Since I was working at a TV network, models passing through for auditions would see me and notice my makeup. I remember two of them asking if they could drop by my office to have their makeup done before casting. That moment sparked everything.

Back then, being a makeup artist wasn’t as popular as it is today. I had to ask around, track down contact numbers of makeup artists featured in magazines, and reach out to ask if it was even possible to make a living out of it. I considered enrolling in a makeup school, but with limited funds, I chose to practice on myself instead. I began collaborating with photographers and models for free and the rest is history.

Like most people in this field, I started small. My first clients were family: my sister, cousins, and friends, and the network grew from there. I was passionate about improving and constantly pushed myself to learn. I joined a Shu Uemura makeup competition and won, which led to joining the brand’s makeup team, and eventually, I became part of the pool of artists at L’Oréal. I worked on countless commercials for Maybelline, L’Oréal Paris, Garnier, and Kiehl’s, an era I never thought would play such a crucial role in shaping my future.

A few years later, I was incredibly honored and over the moon to be given a major role as NYX Philippines’ Chief Makeup Artist. It was truly a dream come true. I loved the brand. Its creativity, bold colors, playful spirit, and experimental edge deeply resonated with my artistic personality.

But it was short-lived. My time as Chief Makeup Artist ended when NYX had to close its doors. While the company offered me other opportunities, I began feeling a quiet whisper in my ear and a small tug in my heart, nudging me toward something I once believed was massive and impossible. I’d hear it every time I opened my Bible in the morning. At first, I tried to ignore it out of fear and uncertainty.

But it was all Him. God led me here.

If I could have coffee with my 18-year-old self, she would never believe that one day she’d leave her family behind and venture out into the world alone. Everything, from the moment I heard that calling to this very interview is all because of God. Back then, I thought I was already dreaming big when I imagined seeing my name in the credits of a magazine spread or becoming the Chief Makeup Artist of a brand.

But He had other plans, plans bigger than four walls and far beyond borders.

MS: Can you walk us through a typical workday as a makeup artist in such a fast-paced city? Do you have a ritual or routine before starting work on a client or project?

CG: Being a makeup artist in New York is both exciting and action-packed. Most days begin with what every MUA knows as daily cardio: commuting with a suitcase in tow, climbing multiple staircases, rushing to catch the train, briskly walking several blocks, because everyone in the city walks fast, and setting up a full makeup station in under ten minutes, because every second counts.

No two days are the same. One day you might be in one borough, the next you’re in another. Sometimes you’ll hop between multiple boroughs in a single day, or even between states, starting in New Jersey and ending in New York, or vice versa.

Just reading that paragraph feels exhausting! Working here is a completely different experience compared to how I worked back in Manila, where I could drive to locations or conveniently book a Grab. In New York, the subway, though sometimes inconvenient when hauling luggage, is usually the fastest way to get around. That said, I’ve made some key lifestyle changes to make each day more manageable.

First and foremost, I’ve condensed my kit to a science. My small carry-on suitcase contains everything I need, from products for a no-makeup makeup commercial to soft red carpet glam to a full snatched runway look. Yes, even my mirror and light fit in there. Packing a kit here is a sport, and an essential skill if you want to book multiple jobs in a day. Thankfully, production companies and brands usually send over makeup inspiration and model photos before shoots or events, which allows me to plan ahead and pack only what I need. On the other hand, I’m also fortunate that it’s common practice here for productions to cover travel costs: whether it’s Uber, gas, or tolls, which definitely helps offset the hustle of getting around. Work smarter, not harder. That’s the motto of every NYC MUA when it comes to kit-packing.

I also prioritize fitness, and it plays a huge role in helping me power through the physical demands of the job. I weightlift on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and dedicate Tuesdays and Thursdays to running. Most people think it’s impossible to work out after a full day of being on your feet, but doing this consistently for years has made me stronger. I can now climb stairs with my luggage with ease, sprint back and forth from backstage to the dressing room without breaking a sweat, and stand for hours doing makeup without my hips or back giving out.

MS: You’ve worked backstage at major events like Fashion Week. How would you describe the energy in those moments, and do you have a favorite memory from behind the scenes?

CG: I always describe the backstage of a New York Fashion Week show as an astounding gathering of talent in one room. It’s a space that’s always buzzing with energy, where everyone is moving quickly and with purpose. There’s the pressure of executing the required looks perfectly in 30 minutes, sometimes even less. And then there’s the surreal feeling of doing makeup on models I used to only see in international magazines back when I was still living in the Philippines.

It’s a beautiful kind of chaos that I truly love. While I’m working on a model’s makeup, nail artists are painting her nails, hairstylists are putting final touches on her hair, and photographers and videographers are circling around, capturing behind-the-scenes footage. It’s absolutely beautiful. I end the day physically exhausted, but my heart is full and deeply inspired.

One of my favorite memories was during a Sergio Hudson show: one of my very first since moving to New York. We had finished the makeup on all the models, and they were already getting dressed, when the Key Makeup Artist pulled me aside. He asked me to wait for a model who was running late and to do her makeup in 15 minutes because he needed to be backstage doing touch-ups as the models were already starting to line up.

The model ended up being even later than expected. When she finally arrived, it was a full-on team effort: hair, nails, makeup, and wardrobe all working on her simultaneously to get her ready in under 10 minutes. The stage manager hovered nearby, counting down the seconds. As soon as we finished, she grabbed the model and sprinted to the stage. It felt like we had all just run a 400-meter dash around a track.

It was intense, but the experience was incredible. I still get chills thinking about that moment.

MS: Looking back on your career, which project has been the most memorable for you, and what made it so significant that it still sticks with you to date?

CG: Looking back on my career, I’ve been blessed to work on projects I never could have imagined I’d be doing in my younger years. One that will always stand out is my very first international campaign for Shiseido. It was surreal to see my work displayed on Shiseido’s store windows and featured across Sephora aisles. What made it even more special was hearing from friends around the world who saw my work, not just in New York, but across the U.S., and even internationally in places like Hong Kong, Singapore, and Canada. It was a full-circle moment that reminded me: God’s plans are always far greater than anything I could have dreamed for myself.

MS: Who are some of the most unforgettable celebrities or personalities you’ve worked with, and what made those experiences or encounters special?

CG: Some of the most unforgettable experiences I’ve had came early on, when I had just moved here. I never imagined I’d end up working with people I had only seen on TV or heard on the radio. I remember doing makeup for Debbie Harry of Blondie and feeling in awe just being in the same room as her. Then there was Buddy Valastro, the Cake Boss himself. Someone I used to watch on TLC back home. Suddenly, I was the one getting him camera-ready. Last year, I even worked as a special FX makeup artist for Jimmy Fallon’s horror house. Something I never imagined doing in my lifetime. Just being part of a show I used to only watch on TV felt completely surreal.

More recently, I had the honor of doing makeup for Kathrine Switzer for a feature tied to the Olympics. She was the first woman to officially enter and finish the Boston Marathon in 1967, a time when women weren’t even allowed to run due to deeply rooted misogynistic beliefs. Learning about her story left me in awe. She didn’t just run a race. She broke barriers. Being in her presence was a powerful reminder that women are capable, strong, and more than able to take up space, even in places where we’ve been told we don’t belong. We can do hard things, and we always have.

MS: Heading the makeup team for the Filipinxt Fashion Show is a big milestone. Can you share more about that experience and what it means to you as both an artist and a Filipina?

CG: I truly believe we are living in a renaissance of Filipino talent. Everywhere you look, whether in entertainment, culinary arts, sports, design, or fashion, Filipinos are making their mark. That’s why I’m incredibly honored to be part of this historic moment for Philippine fashion on the global stage.

Filipinxt is the first and only Filipino show recognized by the CFDA, featuring an all-Filipino lineup of designers. Each one showcasing the depth, creativity, and diversity of our local talent. I can’t help but feel proud of all its success. It’s about time the world recognized what Filipinos are made of.

Every Pinoy backstage had a story: from the director, photographers, videographers, models, PR teams, and casting directors to the assistants and designers. No one chose the easy route. It took courage, grit, and faith for each of us to get here.

For this recent Filipinxt show, I led a team of 23 international makeup artists working on 68 models. It was no small task. I designed five distinct looks to accommodate six designers—ranging from radiant natural skin to bold, smoked-out liners. It was an exciting creative process, especially collaborating with designers who quite literally speak the same language I do. But managing a backstage team that came from Colombia, Italy, Switzerland, and Mexico, each with different cultural and professional backgrounds, was the real challenge. Still, we made it work, and we delivered on time.

This show wasn’t just about fashion. It was about identity, unity, and the power of representation. And if this is any sign of what’s to come, then the future of Filipino creativity on the world stage is only just beginning.

MS: Working in the US must have taught you a lot about the craft, the industry, and even yourself. What are the most important lessons you’ve taken away from your journey so far?

CG: In my seven years of living and working in the U.S., I’ve learned so much, not just about my craft, but about myself. One of the biggest lessons has been the importance of staying open to growth. In this industry, you can never stop learning. I’m reminded of something Confucius said: ‘If you’re the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room.’ I see it the same way with makeup. If you think you’re the most talented in the room, it might be time to find a new room. Surrounding yourself with people who challenge and inspire you is how you level up. Not just in skill, but in mindset.

MS: Beyond your projects, you also teach at the New York Makeup Academy. What’s the most rewarding or fulfilling part of being a mentor to future makeup artists?

CG: I’ve been teaching at the New York Makeup Academy for two years now, and the most fulfilling part of being a mentor is witnessing my students grow, from the moment they step into the classroom to the day they graduate. Many come in with little to no knowledge of makeup, or with a limited perspective on makeup techniques. But by the end of an eight-week course, I see them transform, more confident in their skills, more open in their creativity, and more refined in their technique.

What’s even more rewarding, though, is watching them succeed beyond the classroom. Some of my former students are now internationally published artists. Others are working on film sets or building thriving businesses back in their home countries. That kind of success is deeply fulfilling because they didn’t stop. They kept going, and continued applying what they learned well beyond the classroom.

MS: How do you weave your Filipino roots and identity into your work in such an international setting? Has working with high-profile clients changed the way you approach your craft?

CG: It’s a habit I grew up seeing in many Filipinos, especially here abroad. The tendency to take initiative, to do things thoroughly even when no one’s looking, and put care into the smallest details. That commitment to doing a good job, even without being asked, has always stayed with me.

Here in New York, that kind of work ethic speaks volumes. In a fast-paced, high-pressure environment, where people don’t always have time to explain or double-check, being someone others can count on builds trust quickly. Reliability becomes more than a strength. It becomes your reputation.

Working with high-profile clients hasn’t changed how I approach the job; if anything, it’s only reinforced the values I was raised with. People notice when you’re consistent.

In the end, it’s not just about doing the work. It’s about showing up with integrity, wherever you are in the world.

MS: What exciting projects or dream collaborations are you looking forward to in the near future? Please give us a glimpse of what's next for you.

CG: In the spirit of learning and growth, I’ve recently started training in hairstyling. Back in Manila, I focused solely on makeup, but here, versatility is key. Many producers look for artists who can do both. Learning hair has already opened new doors, from weddings to shoots, and I’m excited to keep building on it little by little.

One exciting project I’m especially looking forward to is keying a solo show for a Filipino designer at New York Fashion Week this February. I’m deeply grateful for the trust and the platform, and even more so to be part of a moment that spotlights Filipino talent on a global runway. Sharing space with people who remind me of home, while doing work I love, feels like a full-circle moment I’ll never take for granted.

Right now, my work feels like a fulfilling balance: doing commercials, runway shows, weddings, and teaching at the academy. It’s a blend of creating and giving back. A rhythm of learning and sharing that I plan to keep nurturing.

As for dream collaborations, I’d love to one day work at Milan or Paris Fashion Week, and be part of more international campaigns for global brands. If there’s one thing I’ve learned about dreaming, it’s that you can never put a cap on it. This journey has already been “exceedingly, abundantly more than I ever asked for or imagined,” and I’m excited to see what’s next.

MS: Is there any piece of advice you would like to give to aspiring makeup artists hoping to break into the international scene?

CG: Expanding your horizons can feel overwhelming, even a little scary. But it’s one of the most rewarding and fulfilling things you can do as an artist. For those looking to break into the international scene, my biggest piece of advice is this: never lose your style. Your artistic voice is what sets you apart. It’s your signature, your truth. Stay true to it, because the right audience, the one meant for your work, will find you, connect with you, and appreciate you for exactly who you are, wherever you are in the world.

Last night, our very own Filipina entrepreneur/model/iconic beauty Georgina Wilson, represented Filipino beauty and Sunnies Face at the Financial Times Luxury Summit Asia Edition in Hong Kong. Clad in a fiery red Ferragamo mini trench coat dress and a matching Sunnies Fluffmatte lipstick in Major, the stunner served visuals and dropped bars.

@ilovegeorginaGeorgina spoke alongside other beauty entrepreneurs like Irene Kim for Financial Times Live's "The Rise of Asian Beauty" talk—discussing the rising demand for not just Korean, but Filipino beauty around the world as well. This has been observed with the rise of the international fame of Sunnies Face.

"I wanted to mention that the reason why we created the brand is because we wanted to create the perfect product, in the perfect packaging." True to Sunnies Face fashion, through the years, the brand has offered beauty "objects" that deserve more than just a spot in your vanity or your kit—they deserve to be displayed and shown off.

Sunnies Face Blush On, Glow On, and Sculpt On"Sometimes when I look at our Blush, or any of our objects, I just love displaying them. We kind of understood that the consumer wanted to see, they want a formula that they love, but they wanted it in a packaging that resonated with them", she shares.

13 years ago, when Georgina started Sunnies Face with partners Bea Soriano-Dee and Eric Dee, Martine Cajucom, and Jessica Wilson, they didn't know how big a brand it would eventually become. Up to this day, selling millions of products a decade and more after, Georgina admits to feeling valid qualms when it comes to selling the brand to a bigger investor. "Like any founder, we think, 'I'm just getting started. Like, a decade in, I'm just getting started. There's a lot more that we want to do. And if we find the right partner, then why not? But for now, I think that independence is exactly what brings the beauty of the brand." "I think there's a sincerity and an honesty that comes with our products because we're not forced by anyone to do anything."

Avignon Clinic invited us to an overnight getaway for the grand launch of its latest branch at SM Pampanga. We joined a guided tour through the clinic’s minimalist interiors, adorned with palettes of golden, silky wellness robes, glossy marble accents, and relaxing shades of brown. Afterwards, we were treated to our preferred procedures—enjoying soothing facials, contour-redefining treatments, and rejuvenating drips.

The following chapter of our Avignon Clinic voyage brought us to a tranquil stay at Nuan Farm and Resort, offering a quick and calming rest after the long drive. With surprises continuously unfolding, the aesthetic center treated us to a vintage-themed dinner at famed Pampanga spot Denlim’s Kitchen, delighting us with authentic Kapampangan delicacies.

The skin-flattering experience extended beyond the day of our media indulgence. The day after, Avignon Clinic welcomed star-studded celebrities for the ribbon-cutting ceremony, further solidifying its reputation as an elite aesthetic center. The event was graced by Marian Rivera, Barbie Forteza, Julia Montes, and many more beautiful and A-listers.

During the launch, Marian Rivera told METRO about the very first treatment she tried at Avignon Clinic: “Ulthera,” she shared. Known for wearing multiple hats as a mother, artist, and businesswoman, the prime actress also emphasized how she continues to defy aging, effortlessly illuminating her own ring light at every camera angle, “Syempre sinasabi nila, ‘kailangan nasa loob,’ of course given yon; pero syempre kailangan din natin alagaan ‘yung outside, which is nandyan si Avignon [Clinic] to take care of me,” Marian explained.

Avignon Clinic’s Exion Lift

As mentioned above, every guest had the chance to select their preferred facial treatment, and I chose one that would finally address my long-time concern–minimizing the appearance of my double chin. I took a chance and had it sculpted using Avignon Clinic’s Exion Lift, a contouring procedure that’s appropriate to my mid-20s age.

Compared to other treatments I’ve tried, this one involved absolutely no pain—literally a zero out of ten if I were to rate it. From the moment the machine touched my face up until the final glide across the gel, everything felt incredibly relaxing. Just a little advice on the heat (which is tolerable): if you’re someone with low heat tolerance, it might sting a bit, but not to the point where it feels like your skin is burning. But, more like a subtle sensation, as if the fat around your face is gently melting away.

When the aesthetic nurse finished the right side of my face, I noticed a slight difference; the contour looked more defined compared to the other side. To see a more visible result, we proceeded with the treatment, and afterward, the changes became even more noticeable, though not dramatically lifted yet.

However, the next morning, the results left me in awe; the edges of my face looked fully snatched, completely different from the round, fluffy jawline I used to have. I felt so confident taking photos, especially with low-angle selfies–all because that bothersome double chin and the unwanted fat around my jawline had visibly faded.

Truly, Mimiyuuuh's story is one to keep watching.

As for the beauty risks Mimiyuuuh has been taking lately? It must be said that the look Mimiyuuuh and her makeup artist Thazzia Falek did during this photo shoot was jaw-dropping, to say the least. We caught up with the celebrity makeup artist and asked her about the secrets behind this look, how you can cop it, and what makes it a risk you, too, must take.

Metro.Style: How do you describe the look you did on Mimiyuuuh for the MNL Fashion Week x Metro cover?

Thazzia Falek: For the MNL Fashion Week x Metro cover, I wanted to create a look that captured her bold, fearless energy while keeping it sleek and editorial. The focus was on structure and confidence—clean skin, sculpted features, and eyes that command attention. It’s modern glam with an edge—polished yet expressive, just like Mimiyuuuh herself.

Metro.Style: What key trends can our readers pick up from this look?

Thazzia Falek: This look embraces two major trends: power minimalism and statement eyes. Skin is luminous but natural—not overly matte or dewy—to let the eyes and structure shine through. There’s also a nod to monochromatic harmony, with tones that complement each other rather than compete. The overall feel is confident, gender-fluid, and fashion-forward — a perfect reflection of how beauty and style are evolving in 2025.

Metro.Style: We noticed the strong eyes. What key products should one use to achieve the look?

Thazzia Falek: The eyes were the anchor of this look. I used the ISSY Eyeshadow Palettes, Half Magic Eyeshadows, and YSL Eyeshadows. For the lashes, I used Sweed Nikki No Lash-Lash so I can customize it and make her look longer. I also used some YSL eyeliners since we were outdoors, so I needed the look to be waterproof. For skin, I prepped it using Estée Lauder ANR (Advanced Night Repair), for foundation, I used Chanel for that luminous base, and Tom Ford for sculpting and highlight. For cheeks, I used the Dior blushes—they balance each other beautifully. The finish is clean but powerful, with eyes that draw you in.”
