Style swapping is a fun and social way of trying out different things without needing to pay for new pieces. The practice allows us to lessen the waste within the fashion industry while still giving us the freedom of expression. From the likes of Basically Borrowed and Moda Laya, style swapping has been slowly, but surely creeping into Philippine fashion spaces.

Moda Laya is the first one-stop sustainable shop in the Philippines. The brand encourages its customers and audience to engage in clothing swaps. Moda Laya, which is also known to collaborate with Fashion Revolution Philippines, has its store located by the Re Center in Ortigas.

Another frontrunner in sustainable fashion is Basically Borrowed. Jessie Jang, founder of Basically Borrowed, a Manila-based circular fashion community on a mission to keep clothing in use, states, “In many ways, clothing swaps are a great alternative to shopping—it satisfies our constant desire for “newness”; it promises the thrill of a treasure hunt.” She further adds, “the key difference is that instead of setting us off on a wasteful cycle of accumulating & discarding stuff, clothing swaps reduce fashion waste by allowing us to keep clothes in circulation.”

While style swapping is a chic way of testing new styles, it also creates a safer and trusting space in the fashion community. It helps in connecting with friends, both old and new, through trading each other’s stylish clothing. As Jessie Jang said, “It fosters the kind of community experience that hearkens back to the days when we hit the mall with friends.” The practice of sharing clothing has always been a small act of showing trust and vulnerability. As the founder of Basically Borrowed says, “you come for the clothes but stay for the connections you make!”

All in all, style swapping not only connects us with other people and lessens the strain on the environment, but it deepens our relationship with clothing, teaching us to further value and care for the pieces we use.
