When Cris Patwa thinks back to her childhood, she recalls many happy memories of growing up days in Davao where her grandmother had a farm with chickens, carabaos, even geese. Fruit trees grew lush providing them with ripe sweet mangoes in summer, and coconuts all year round. Patwa’s lola, a food entrepreneur, was a busy, active woman engaged in livelihood projects that gave employment to locals, school feeding programs, and even soil health. Years later, these happy, sunlit memories combined with the values of her hardworking grandmother to inspire Patwa in creating her own food business.

In 2021, Patwa and business partner John Fogelman launched Enroot, a line of sparkling teas that celebrated the Filipino cultural heritage that she came from. Fogelman, she explains, has been friends with Brad Pitt for over 20 years and even helped the actor expand the product portfolio of Pitt’s Chateau Miraval. This shared interest in food entrepreneurship brought them together. It was natural for Pitt to back the new beverage and help launch Enroot.

Crafted with 12 chefs from the James Beard Foundation Impact Program, Enroot teas are created following a slow 20-hour cold brew process that allows for the smooth extraction of flavor without any bitterness and astringency. Care is taken for the sparkling teas to have well-balanced flavor amidst the combinations of tea leaves, fruit, herb and spices.

Today Enroot sparkling tea comes in a plethora of fascinating flavors, including Peach Hibiscus Jasmine Green Tea, and Strawberry Lavender Rosemary Tulsi. Food pairing suggestions and cocktail recipes are available on the Enroot website.

The teas are low in calories and carbs, with no added sugar, and are all vegan, kosher and gluten-free. Truly a Filipino heritage tea for the times!
