The World's Greatest Dumplings Are Now In QC

Din Tai Fung opens its first branch in the north

Good news, people of the north! You no longer have to travel far distances to sample the famous xiao long bao and other fabled treasures of Din Tai Fung. The iconic restaurant chain has just opened its newest store at SM North Edsa (SMNE) — the brand’s sixth outlet in the country and 179th in the world. That’s the best news we’ve heard this month!

The new store features a prominent display window where you can watch specially-trained xiao long bao kitchen masters (called shifus) make the beloved dumplings by hand. The shifu are so well-trained they can churn out 20 perfect soup dumplings per minute, which are then rolled, cut, and weighed to a specific number of grams, before they are filled, wrapped, and pleated with 18 to 21 folds. The shifu use techniques that have been passed down and honed through generations.

Din Tai Fung was brought to the Philippines by The Moment Group in 2015. Today, the first store in SM Megamall has sprouted into six locations in various parts of the metro.

The iconic restaurant was originally founded as a cooking oil shop in 1958 in Taiwan. It re-opened in the ‘70s as a restaurant specializing in xiao long bao. These warm and delicate soup dumplings soon grew a devoted following, until the Taiwanese shop transitioned into a full-service restaurant,  later on becoming a global dining phenomenon. Today, it’s the most widely recognized xiao long bao brand in the world.

Its maiden shop along Xinyi Road in Taipei was named one of the top ten restaurants in the world by The New York Times, and the number one restaurant in Asia by The Daily Meal. Its xiao long bao has been called “The World’s Greatest Dumpling” by Forbes Magazine, and described as “small miracles” by Pulitzer Prize-winning food critic Jonathan Gold.
