KG in Stuttgart, Germany. With formal training from Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen and the State Academy of the Arts in Stuttgart, Diefenbach has spent over a decade shaping emotive, human-centered innovations in sanitaryware and investment goods. His collaborations span global leaders such as Hansgrohe, Duravit, Haier, Huawei, Trumpf, Vorwerk, and Zeiss.</p><p>Under his leadership, Phoenix Design has consistently been recognized as one of the world’s top creative design offices, with more than 750 awards to its name and regular recognition from the iF Design Awards. How did you design the experience to fit different moods, lifestyles, or cultural bathing rituals, if at all?</p><p><strong>Andreas Diefenbach (AD): </strong>It&#x27;s a big question, yes. Let’s start with what remains instead of what changes. Innovation is accelerating—technology is exponential, humans are linear. Showering rituals differ: in the Philippines it may be longer and cold, in Africa something else, in Germany something else. And yet this makes me happy: this ritual connects individuals worldwide in a very intimate moment. Showering is not just hygienic—it embraces you, refreshes you, calms you, prepares you for sleep, wakes you up. PowderRain feels like thousands of kisses; one lady said it felt like “a thousand kisses of angels.”</p><p>Designing the shower is designing a cultural moment. The bathroom is the box within the box—the most personal space. Then the dimension of space: warm/cold, light/dark, scent, before and after the shower. That’s why bathrooms and bedrooms are merging; they follow rituals. Showering is tied to sleep quality, and sleep is under pressure today—screens, social media, overstimulation. These are the dimensions we design for: being alive by shower.</p><p><strong>MS: </strong>Can you describe key moments in your design or interface with hansgrohe?</p><p><strong>AD: </strong>The magic moments are when people react to a model without words—just their faces, their bodies. Magic is indescribable. The “aha” moment comes after—the rational choices. But it starts with the wow.</p><p>We often use rough models to spark discussion. This improvisation—the “ping pong”—is a major success factor in the collaboration between Hansgrohe and Phoenix. Imagining the future and putting it on the table today.</p><p><strong>MS: </strong>When designers get a brief, there’s usually a moment of inspiration. Did you have such a tool or first image?</p><p><strong>AD: </strong>With Hansgrohe, there are no briefings. Briefings destroy potential. We lead conversations without naming the product too early. We spend weeks ping-ponging ideas. Something arises in my head, something else in yours.
