"Sins of the Father" Lead Star Jessy Mendiola on the Cover of Metro

Jessy Mendiola did not expect she&#x27;d return to acting. As Gerald Anderson, her co-star in the new action-drama series Sins of the Father, said, &quot;She has every reason not to be there. May pamilya na siya. May asawa na siya. May anak na siya. But for her to be there 100% and ginagawa &#x27;yung best niya, talagang nakaka-inspire.&quot;The leading lady, who last appeared in Sandugo back in 2019, took a showbiz hiatus to focus on herself and motherhood, nurturing her and Luis Manzano&#x27;s family. But she found Sins of the Father too exciting to pass up on. As the lead actress in Sins of the Father, starring alongside Gerald, Jessy is taking on the role of Agnes Policarpio, whom she describes as a mysterious and multi-layered character—something she’s actually never done before.“Aside from the storyline, I really like the role. The role is very mysterious,” she shared in an exclusive interview with Metro.Style. “At first, you&#x27;ll see her na, &#x27;Oh wow, she&#x27;s so innocent, so pretty, ganyan. As the production of Sins of the Father progressed, ABS-CBN decided to shift gears and lean into a more thrilling, suspense-filled action drama with a welcome layer of social relevance. Jessy has long been part of the ABS-CBN family, and she did not hesitate to put her trust in the production and embrace the moment to step back into the spotlight.While we can recall Jessy and Gerald working together in the teleserye Budoy in 2011, this time around, things hit differently. “Isa lang talaga masasabi ko, matanda na kami. We matured a lot,” Jessy said with a laugh. She expressed how happy she is to be reunited with Gerald, describing him as one of the kindest male celebrities she’s ever met. “Palagi ko nga ito sinasabi. So kahit sa mga directors namin, talagang may mga suggestions siya. Even sa akin, sinasabi niya, &#x27;pag fight scene lalo, sinasabi niya sa akin na ano kaya kung ganito or ganyan,” she shared. Their growth, both as actors and individuals, is what makes their reunion as exciting as it is nostalgic.Sins of the Father has crime, action, and mystery at its core. With that, the most challenging parts for Jessy were, of course, the action scenes. After almost six years of hiatus, she admitted it had been a long time since she last trained for something as strenuous as those. Jessy said, “My gosh, the action scenes! Talagang hindi ko ine-expect. Sabi ko, &#x27;Kaya ko ba ’to? Kaya ko ba ’to?,” recalling her reaction during the early days of shooting. After countless takes of intense physical scenes, she admitted her body was sore with bruises, especially on her back. Still, despite the pain and exhaustion, Jessy’s heart is all in, and she&#x27;s enjoying every bit of the process.Outside the show, she opened up about a different kind of battle behind the camera and how difficult it is for her to be away from her daughter, Rosie. “Talagang, for me, when you become a mom, you can never give your 100% at work. Like, a part of you will always be at home, and that&#x27;s Rosie,” she opened up. With more lived experiences—especially as a mother—to draw from, she now finds her acting skills more emotionally grounded. Being a mother is never easy, so she wants to be truly present for her daughter. But she knows that ensuring she feels whole and fulfilled will also help with that goal. There&#x27;s still a lot she wants to achieve for herself, and having the best of both worlds—pursuing her career while raising a family—is something she’s grateful for. When asked why this project felt just right at this point in her career, Jessy was honest with her answer. “Of course, bihira na lang talaga ngayon mabigyan ng show,” she began. She shared how Sins of the Father almost didn’t happen for her, feeling hesitant and even apologetic that the team had to wait for her to finish the campaign period of her husband, who ran for vice governor of Batangas at the last elections, before filming. “I almost said no. Kasi nahihiya ako, palagi na lang nila akong hinihintay,” she admitted. But things aligned for a reason. The script was rewritten, and Sins of the Father, and Jessy saw it as a blessing in disguise. This time, she’s not doing it just to survive or support her family, but genuinely out of passion. “Ngayon, it&#x27;s more of the passion to pursue the craft,” she told Metro.Style. Before saying &#x27;yes&#x27; to Sins of the Father, she even rekindled a childhood dream and ended up taking ballet, something she always wanted but couldn’t afford growing up. “Maybe after this show, babalik ako ulit doon,” Jessy added. And while she dreams of starting a business someday, Jessy admitted she’s not the multitasking type: “I call it seasons of life. The story tackles topics like deception, scheming, and scamming, which feel incredibly relevant, especially in today&#x27;s digital era. Jessy teased that her character, Agnes, may look pure on the outside, but there&#x27;s more to her than meets the eye. “You’ll learn a lot,” she summed up.
