Metro: In Conversation With Ron Chan of "John Shaw: Nuclear Winter"

<div style="text-align:center"><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1756286727781ron chan - john shaw nucelar winer 1.jpeg" style="width:700px" class="fr-fic fr-dib"/></div><div><br/></div><p>There is simply no business like showbusiness.</p><p><strong>Ron Chan</strong>, a Dubai-based Filipino-Chinese entrepreneur, is making a bold leap from his boardroom duties to writing, acting, and producing the film <strong><em>John Shaw: Nuclear Winter</em></strong>.</p><p><em>John Shaw: Nuclear Winter</em>, an apocalyptic thriller directed by <strong>Danni Ugali</strong>, follows the story of a lone operative who races against time to save the world on the brink of global collapse. The story unravels a web of conspiracy and betrayal that endangers civilization. Chan takes on the lead role opposite <strong>Anastasiia Dymchenko</strong>. The film also stars <strong>Jelizaveta Mescerjakova</strong>, <strong>Maurice Ferando</strong>, <strong>Hassan Reda</strong>, <strong>Steven Fredriksen</strong>, and<strong> LJ Suyko</strong>.</p><p>“I had an interest in filmmaking. However, due to a lack of resources—it&#x27;s not easy to make movies—I had some limitations. So I just parked that idea until I opened businesses, and I was able to get an opportunity. This opportunity came up, and we just did it. We just started it,” Chan told <strong>Metro.Style</strong>.</p><p>The actor-producer’s professional background was mainly in business, with him serving as Board Chairman of <strong>Richmindale College</strong>, a US-based institution offering degree programs in Business, Information Technology, and Education. He also established and led<strong> Rich Talent Vision</strong>, a US-based film and entertainment production company dedicated to discovering talent and developing original, globally resonant stories for film and TV.</p><div><br/></div><div style="text-align:center"><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1756286844779ron chan - john shaw nucelar winer 4.jpeg" style="width:700px" class="fr-fic fr-dib"/></div><div><br/></div><p>Chan shared that his venture into filmmaking came from his love of watching movies.</p><p>“I love watching movies. You know, when I want to take a break, I watch movies. So basically, movies can bring you into different emotions, right? It can help you relax. That&#x27;s why I&#x27;m into movies. So I thought, why not make our own movies? I have some ideas. So we’re trying ideas and then hopefully, it will work later on. But at least right now, we have this product that we want to push. Hopefully, this will be successful,” he shared, optimistic for the potential of the business, where<em> John Shaw: Nuclear Winter </em><strong></strong>is just the first they’re moving forward with, and one of the many stories their production is taking a look at.</p><p>Chan delved deeper into what his debut film is about and how it’s going to explore the consequences of nuclear warfare.</p><p>“The movie is about terrorism, tricking countries into fighting, and it involves a nuclear war. Basically, it&#x27;s related to something that&#x27;s happening right now. We want to show the effects of these things and [how catastrophic it will be] if this happens. There are a lot of lives that will be sacrificed, and so on. It&#x27;s very emotional. It&#x27;s an action movie as well. So it&#x27;s, hopefully, entertaining to the viewers,” Chan said.</p><p>For better creative and administrative control, Chan decided to take on the lead role himself. “I’ve decided to take on the main role so that we can control how the movie will go further,” he explained. <em>John Shaw</em>, the billionaire character in the film, is seen as a potential franchise with planned sequels in the future.</p><div><br/></div><div style="text-align:center"><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1756286962841ron chan - john shaw nucelar winer 13.jpeg" style="width:700px" class="fr-fic fr-dib"/></div><div><br/></div><p>He also shared the experience of working on the film project: “It took us around six or seven months [to work on it]. When we first started it, we had to experiment. There&#x27;s a lot of experimentation and changes because it was our first time, although with the help of the team members who have the experience, they guided us in terms of how to move forward, the dos and don&#x27;ts in terms of doing things. So, we were able to pull it off,” he proudly shared, saying that the film features a mix of UAE-based Filipinos and other nationalities working together to deliver the finished product.</p><p>Though the filmmaking experience was not one without challenges, Chan thoughtfully relayed the joy and purpose he found in working on the project. </p><p>“Although this is business, for us—it’s fun. We enjoyed it a lot, so it’s like we’re not working,” he beamed fondly.</p><p><em>John Shaw: Nuclear Winter </em>is also notable for incorporating the use of AI in the film. “We used AI in this movie to provide the actors and environments. AI can really help a lot. There’s a lot of outputs already that show how capable it is,” Chan said.</p><p>Chan’s background in IT also helped make the integration of AI in filmmaking seamless. “The fact that I’m exposed to information technology really helped a lot because I understand how it works. It&#x27;s also easy for me to use it because I&#x27;m already exposed to these kinds of applications,” he noted.</p><p>Chan looks forward to creating more films and projects that will showcase his creativity, Filipino culture and folklore, and more of Filipino talents in the global film industry. He is also open to collaborations and growth.</p><p>“We want to integrate with the community and with the industry.
