Christian Bautista Talks About "Bersamamu" and "Sa'yo Lamang"

While the world knows him as ”<strong>Asia’s Romantic Balladeer</strong>,<strong></strong>” a title cemented by two decades of timeless hits, he is gaining a fresh wave of popularity among Gen Z for a different kind of stage: content creation.</p><p>“There are some times <em>na</em> I would walk around and <em>may mga </em>young Gen Zs<em> na nagsasabi</em>, ‘Hey look, it’s Christian Bautista, the content creator,” he shared, adding that some even recognize him today for his live-streamed gaming content. “It’s a nice feeling. <em>Nakaka</em>-young.”</p><p>If you’re following Christian on social media, you’ll know that funny videos with his wife, <strong>Kat Ramnani</strong>, have also become staples on his feed. Even with the countless husband-and-wife content videos across different social media platforms, Christian and Kat’s posts are worth watching because their chemistry as a couple translates into their content, thanks to their wit and comedic timing. The couple is actually behind <strong>NYMA Talent Management</strong>, a digital marketing and influencer management company, with him as president and her as COO. Through NYMA, they support and empower artists, enabling them to grow in a dynamic environment and expand their reach.</p><p>“It&#x27;s nice, <em>kasi</em> being married to her allows us to work together—travel and work together, be together more… Since we share a common goal and purpose, it’s just been really nice to physically be together during this time,” Christian told <strong>Metro.Style</strong>. </p><p>It’s music to their ears when people compliment their videos. “We’re so happy <em>kapag naririnig namin ’yan</em>: ‘Oh, I love your content.’ Oh, thanks! <em>Pinaghirapan po namin ’yan</em>,” he said. He has a work studio, where he brings out his creativity amid organized chaos. To keep his finger on the pulse, he frequently tunes into Spotify’s New Music Friday playlist, saying, “I wanna know what&#x27;s going on, what&#x27;s new,<em> sino ’yung bagong</em> artist, <em>ano ’yung bagong</em> sound.”</p><p>“And, if I’m not listening to whatever is in New Music Friday,” he said, laughing. “I play my own songs <em>para tumaas ang </em>streams.”</p><p>Christian’s latest musical venture is a testament to his enduring connection with Southeast Asia: his take on “<strong>Bersamamu</strong>” and its Tagalog version, “<strong>Sa’Yo Lamang.</strong>” “Bersamamu” is a song by Indonesia-based Bruneian singer <strong>Jaz</strong>. The song was released in 2023, and Christian loved it the moment he heard it. It just felt right for him to do a version of the song, considering his connection to Indonesia, where his 2004 single, “<strong>The Way You Look at Me</strong>,” achieved breakthrough success. </p><p>Christian shared, “One of the goals <em>din naman</em> is to always try to release music for ASEAN, for our Southeast Asian neighbors and friends. And Indonesia’s a big part of me and my career. The songs&#x27; heartbeat lies in their classic yet upbeat tone, the kind that makes you snap your fingers, stomp your feet, bop your head, and sway from side to side.</p><p>To complete the package, the music videos—produced by <strong>Ziv</strong> and directed by <strong>Tristan Ortega</strong>—embrace a distinctly Filipino brand of nostalgia: the <em>karaoke</em> machine. Under the creative direction of <strong>Rico Blanco </strong>and his company,<strong> Balcony-Prime</strong>, the visuals perfectly mirror the songs&#x27; upbeat, ”finger-snapping” energy.</p><p>Christian recalled the filming of the MVs, sharing that because everything went so smoothly, they were able to work on several things in just one day. “We had the city as the background. We had ’<em>yung</em> classic <em>n</em><em></em><em>a</em> suit… <em>Tapos</em>, because<em> nga may</em> beat <em>ng konti</em>, I had to move a bit <em>sa</em> content <em>ko kasi laging</em> one step <em>lang ’yung sayaw ko</em>. So, <em>ngayon</em>, <em>medyo mga</em> a few more steps<em> na ginawa namin</em>. <em>Pero</em>,<em> dahil ang saya rin talaga nung kanta</em>, <em>napapa</em>-groove <em>kami</em> <em>talaga</em>,” he said. “So, <em>naging masaya ’yung</em> shoot, <em>naging</em> organized, <em>mabilis</em>, pack up <em>agad</em>. <em>At</em> imagine, in one day, <em>naka</em>-shoot<em> na kami</em> for ‘Bersamamu,’ <em>naka</em>-shoot<em> kami </em>for ‘Sa’yo Lamang,’ <em>naka</em>-shoot <em>kami</em> for the lyric video, all in one.”</p><p>Every element in the music videos fits the tone and vibe of Christian’s songs. The attention to detail is clever. Look closely, and you’ll appreciate the thought that went into bringing the tracks to life visually. There’s a juxtaposition between the MV of “Sa’yo Lamang” and “Bersamamu”; the video for the former made use of a <em>karaoke</em> machine, and interestingly, the lyric visualizer of “Bersamamu” is the same video used for the karaoke. While he acknowledges that love songs remain his core, he is eager to experiment. “We have to always be open to experimentation, always open to different genres, different ideas,” Christian said when asked about his current mindset as an artist. “As much as I said I won&#x27;t lose my core, which is love, I can’t just keep on churning out the same thing. So definitely, there will still be ballads later on, <em>pero</em> as an artist, there should always be time to explore, and that’s what we did with this song.” </p><p>Aligned with his goal to embrace new opportunities is his drive to collaborate with more artists, specifically ASEAN artists. “A few months ago, I was invited to perform for ASEAN conventions here in Manila and in Cebu as well,” Christian shared. “And <em>na</em>-revive ’<em>yung aking</em>—<em>parang</em> enjoyment to really perform for other ASEAN countries and to represent the Philippines. I wish I were as talented as <em>sina</em><em> </em>Rico Blanco, Yeng Constantino, <em>na parang </em>in two minutes, <em>kaya nila maglabas ng</em> hit song. So it&#x27;s always been a dream of mine. So I will constantly write and pitch and release songs, whether for me or for other artists.”</p><p>Time’s a-changin’, and so, as an artist, Christian strives to keep evolving.
