<p><strong></strong><strong>MPTC (Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation) Tour of Luzon</strong>, the country&rsquo;s premier cycling competition, just finished, and it was an epic cycle.</p><p>Following its phenomenally successful comeback last year after a long hiatus, themed &ldquo;<strong>Great Revival</strong>,&rdquo; this year&rsquo;s MPTC Tour of Luzon evolved into something bigger in terms of scale, distance, and prizes.&nbsp;</p><p>The 2026 event, with the theme &ldquo;<strong>Heritage in Motion</strong>,&rdquo; served as a 1,800-kilometer test of endurance and strategy, kicking off in Calatagan, Batangas&mdash;a new direction to start from the Southern part of the country.</p><div><br></div><div style="text-align: center;"><iframe src="https://www.facebook.com/plugins/video.php?height=314&href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Ftourofluzoncycling%2Fvideos%2F1266061265650269%2F&show_text=false&width=560&t=0" width="560" height="314" style="border:none;overflow:hidden;" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="true"></iframe><br></div><div><br></div><p><strong>Madeleine Guico</strong>, co-organizer of the MPTC Tour of Luzon 2026 and Chief Operations Officer of Mad Management, Inc., explained this year&rsquo;s theme and key highlights.</p><p>&ldquo;The theme is &lsquo;Heritage in Motion&rsquo; because we wanted to make sure that we focused on three important aspects. One of those is to make it a platform for regional tourism. Then, second is to make it a gateway to [becoming a] world cycling event. And then the third one is to make it an avenue for unity and strength through sports,&rdquo; Guico said, adding that they would want the tour to become a worldwide event, especially since it&rsquo;s been gaining more attention from many foreign teams.</p><div><br></div><div style="text-align: center;">[[PHOTO ALBUM]]</div><div><br></div><p>Key highlights of the MPTC Tour of Luzon, which ran from April 29 to May 13, 2026, included the increased scale of the cycling competition. Previously, the tours were largely concentrated in Northern Luzon, but the 2026 route has been expanded. With South Luzon now included and kick-started in Batangas, the race has increased its total distance from approximately 1,000 kilometers (km) last year to over 1,800 km.</p><p>&ldquo;One major consideration for the route is to make sure that it&#39;s safe and that it&#39;s passable, making sure that the roads are well checked and that they are well maintained. From the previous prize money of P8 million, this year&rsquo;s total grand prize jumped to 12 million, with individual prize winnings doubled from P1 million to P2 million. With bigger things at stake, the competition attracted a diverse roster of athletes. This year features 13 teams, including six foreign contingents and seven local teams, to represent the best of Filipino cycling athletes.</p><p>Guico shared how MPTC prepared for the event, saying, &ldquo;While MPTC doesn&#39;t really have visibility or direct access to the training, we tried to create avenues or opportunities for the athletes to help them. We gave them the tools to prepare them for the competition, so we&#39;ve partnered with one of the major partners that we have&mdash;the Philippine Sports Institute (PSI),&rdquo; the organizer High-Performance Unit provided a series of six preparatory webinars, with sessions covering critical topics such as optimal performance strategies, hydration, and nutritional guidance. The MPTC Tour of Luzon also partnered with Cardinal Santos Medical Center to assist throughout the race, with a mobile medical hospital set up to ensure emergencies were addressed immediately for the cyclists.</p><p>The MPTC Tour of Luzon is still mostly men, but the organizers welcome efforts to diversify the sport. Guico shared that a recent &ldquo;executive race&rdquo; saw significant participation from women, which suggested a growing interest.</p><p>&ldquo;Demographics-wise, for this competition, men are still the ones joining mainly. In that executive race, probably because it was a bit less intimidating, I would say we had a lot of women join the competition. I think maybe over time and with a lot of progression, more and more women would be interested in eventually joining competitions like the MPTC Tour of Luzon. I&#39;m optimistic that we&#39;d get to see more women join this,&rdquo; the woman executive herself opined.</p><p>Though Guico has already met a variety of cyclists for the competition, she does not have a cyclist who particularly inspired her because she finds them all admirable.</p><p>&ldquo;I&#39;ve been really inspired by how they have been so disciplined in terms of how they have been training. I think that&#39;s a common thing with athletes in general&mdash;how they discipline themselves and how they have established a routine. If you&#39;re an athlete and even a sports enthusiast in general, you really must have that rigor, and you have to establish that discipline and a routine that you have to follow every day. In the morning, you have to discipline yourself to wake up at a certain time, to have a certain meal plan, and then start your exercise at a certain time, and then do that consistently every day. This year, we did 1,800 km from 1,000 km. Next year, hopefully, we will expand further to the South Luzon area. Hopefully, maybe we can do more than 2,000 km. Until such time, we can continue to make it more challenging and hopefully, we gain more traction with international teams,&rdquo; she stated.</p><p>&nbsp;&ldquo;In terms of mounting it operationally, we hope that we could formalize and make it accreditation-wise. We hope that we can get it accredited locally in terms of getting more accreditation.
