Metro Exclusive: Fashion Stylist John Lozano On Elevating His Craft And Taking On A New Role

Here’s how John Lozano paved an influential path in fashion styling and more.

Metro is always in pursuit of groundbreaking voices in fashion—artists who not only create looks but invite us to dive deeper into producing concepts and pushing Filipino artistry to the global stage. It is in this spirit that we had the pleasure of conversing with John Lozano, one of today’s most recognized fashion stylist-turned-fashion director to his clients and the Chief Marketing Officer of BYS Philippines.

John, a visionary in his own right, has crafted a unique visual realm through his work. You may know him for dressing the likes of Donny Pangilinan, James Reid, and many others—but the top fashion stylist has paved an influential path of his own. In our exclusive conversation, he delves deeper into elevating his craft and bringing the ultimate Fashion Week experience in the Philippines through BYS Fashion Week.

“Styling, compared to when I started, has changed dramatically,” John starts. After 20 years of working in the industry, John saw how his career changed from carefully selecting clothes to taking charge of branding and overall fashion strategy for his clients. It used to be sort of a novelty to hire a fashion stylist before. Fast forward to today, it’s almost imperative to have brands and celebrities engage with one to further convey a strong fashion message. “Fashion stylists play a big role in shaping the image of an artist or in painting the picture of a campaign. I’m glad we are finally getting recognized for our work,” says John.

This year, John took on a new role as fashion director to James Reid. His new title involves being in charge of styling, liaising, and overseeing his clients’ overall look, including makeup and hair. From red carpets to fashion week appearances, performances, events, and more, John makes sure that his clients are in good hands.

There’s a short list of Filipino celebrities who have been invited to New York, London, Milan, or Paris during Fashion Week and James Reid is one of them. A few months ago, James and John took over Men’s Fashion Week by storm. During their trip, John styled many of James’ outfits including his looks for Louis Vuitton and Gucci Spring/Summer 2025.

James is no stranger to fashion. The actor-turned-singer and record label founder has always been influenced by streetwear, contemporary fashion, and luxury. James’ style ever since John came on board has only evolved into something greater.

When asked about his biggest takeaway from this excursion, John said “The creative process is all about connection, connection with the artist you’re styling, connection with the audience, and connection with yourself” For him, without the connection, the story that you want to convey will be incomplete. "As a stylist it’s important for me to have a good relationship with my clients and I take the time to really get to know them. That connection dictates the entire look of the client because that makes it mutual and collaborative."

With regards to the shows he attended "I saw how shows in Paris and Milan are rooted in connection. They have a knack for knowing what their brand is without compromising what their audience wants. That’s why with BYS Fashion Week, we place a huge importance on ensuring that the designers have a say when it comes to their shows so that they can convey their stories well.”

To anyone who plans to start a career in fashion styling or have already chosen this profession, John hopes that you’re ready to do your absolute best in order to pave your own path. “I can do cliche answers like, never give up or do your best, but I believe they already know this and if not, they should. As a fashion stylist, you should always look beyond what you do. If you are going to do something, do it with intent,” says John. Like any other profession, fashion styling can take years of trial and error to build momentum.

For him, staying power is more important than having fleeting moments. “Find your identity, do good work, and be as professional as possible—do all of these faithfully, and over time, you will reap what you sow.”
