At <strong>Milan Fashion Week</strong>, the war of hoping to be the next big thing and fighting against fading into the background of obscurity is won. The battle strategy? The skill of understanding rhythm and the art of reimagination. </p><div><br/></div><p>As the world continues to turn, the industry grows rife with designers hallmarking their ethos on runways. But only are a few gifted with the power to fabricate milestones and memories amidst the bounds of time. Perhaps the up-and-coming could take a page out of the book of brands like <strong>Gucci</strong>, <strong>Ferragamo</strong> and <strong>Bottega Veneta</strong> at <strong>MFW</strong>, whose novelty relies on introspection and mastery of brand psyche, rather than discovering The New New Look. They author the handbook of capturing the house’s quintessence through the language of nostalgia; to create a formulaic continuum of a brand’s conscience through resting on and reconceptualizing classics. </p><div><br/></div><p>In the crowd, audiences with members like <strong>Anne Hathaway</strong>, <strong>Gigi Hadid</strong>, and <strong>Alexa Chung</strong>, behold these celebrations of artistry and flair at the Fashion Capital—and as so it is, another notch is scored on the chronicles of fashion houses like <strong>Etro</strong>, <strong>Jil Sander</strong> and <strong>Prada</strong> who continue to prove themselves as stalwarts of the industry from time immemorial. Such is the case at Tom Ford under the helm of creative director Peter Hawkins whose sophomore collection at the fashion house had the Tom Ford signature written all over it. </p></div><div class="item-desc"><p>Tom Ford - With well-tailored three piece suits and overcoats walking the runway side-by-side sensual and sheer silhouettes, Hawkins recognizes the duality of the Tom Ford woman—one whose power extends from the boardroom to the bedroom.</p></div><div class="item-desc"><p>Etro - There is no such thing as a loud print at Etro’s Ready-To-Wear Fall 2024 Collection, with Marco de Vincenzo’s imprint on the heritage brand being a representation of his skill in duality of honoring Etro’s textile roots and carrying it on through de Vincenzo’s own language.</p></div><div class="item-desc"><p>Etro - There’s an unsung harmony amongst the collection’s variety of textures, silhouettes and fabrics; perhaps that is the interpretation of the show’s title, “Act” that aims to reimagine the ancient theatre practice of masks capturing a variety of emotions and personas—a beautiful metaphor for the vivacious ensembles that come together in his staging of the theater of fashion.</p></div><div class="item-desc"><p>Versace - “The [Versace] woman is a good girl with a wild soul,” says Donatella Versace about the latest collection. “She is prim but sexy.” And in knowing what the namesake brand is and should be, Versace’s Ready-to-Wear Fall 2024 collection feels like an elevated 90s archive walkthrough.</p></div><div class="item-desc"><p>Versace - With a degree in power-dressing and a forté of what could be described as smart luxury—cognizant enough of when it needs to be quiet or loud, Versace adorns the runway with statements of quiet defiance and rebellion finding bright colors in a sea of dark, strong lines and peeks of skin when overcoats run long.</p></div><div class="item-desc"><p>Giorgio Armani - There may not be flowers in winter, however Giorgio Armani takes up the responsibility of introducing florals against darker hues and perhaps this is what Miranda Priestly may give the mark of groundbreaking. According to him, “There are no flowers in winter — so I invented them. They recall happier seasons, and I like the contrast.”</p></div><div class="item-desc"><p>Giorgio Armani - In a variety of styles from cargo pants to gowns, Armani knows how to ensure his brand is always in the conversation no matter what, when or where. With a story of comfort meets elegance, the power of nature takes center stage in striking jewel tones as saturated as the fall and winter sky.</p></div><div class="item-desc"><p>Prada - The juxtaposition on fashion as a means of escape against a backdrop of a world that is slowly falling into ruin is a concept that Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons exude seamlessly. Its tailoring and lingerie in one collection, capitalizing on the trends of today while looking back at history—both of the world in wartime, and the brand as a recontextualization of womenswear tropes.</p></div><div class="item-desc"><p>Prada - For Prada and Simons, retrospectives aren’t about ruminating in the feeling of nostalgia, rather the wit and capability to elevate it into something more modern and to be worn for generations to come. In silky bows and leather coats, the industry’s mother and father write the manifesto for brands willing to learn about the secret to standing the test of time.</p></div><div class="item-desc"><p>Gucci - It is a tale of color and construction at Sabato de Sarno’s sophomore collection for Gucci, and with his more intentional tailoring does he shine the brightest. There’s an art of compromise with de Sarno’s work, with very simple cuts being embellished with finer details: sequins lining the bottom of slip dresses and embossed leather jackets.</p></div><div class="item-desc"><p>Gucci - Although it may not be the most practical to show off legs on the menu for this winter season, de Sarno admits there’s a subtle demand for listening to what the generations of today are wearing. Be that as it may, his legacy is slowly coming to fruition at Gucci as he shows a glimpse of the fashion house’s future with an audience willing to grow with it.</p></div><div class="item-desc"><p>Marni - It’s always quite interesting when a show takes its inspiration of time into the extremes, as seen on Francesco Risso’s collection at Marni for Fall 2024—bringing it all the way back to the animalistic caveman era, from runway setting to prints and elementary shapes, all the way to the fur coats.</p></div><div class="item-desc"><p>Marni - In removing any and all inspirations for the collection, and instead the riveting and stimulating muse of a blank paper being the foundation of this collection, Risso attempts to remove restrictive and preconceived notions about what it means to be an industry player at such a glamorous industry. It’s oversized lapels and deep v-necklines at Marni, yet what remains more important is the stripped down message that the collection provides.</p></div><div class="item-desc"><p>Ferragamo - Maximilian Davis’s stint as creative director at Ferragamo never forgets to pay homage to the fashion house, with the brand’s Fall 2024 collection parading introspective imagery of Salvatore Ferragamo slipping a pump onto Joan Crawfords foot at the Hollywood Boot Shop: Roll up your sleeves! It’s 1920 at Ferragamo.</p></div><div class="item-desc"><p>Ferragamo - Think of the secrecy of wartime and the subtle joy behind a sullen backdrop; square wool coats topping off embroidered dresses that make the Ferragamo woman blend in and yet stand out. Of dropped waists and raised hems, it is reminiscent of a fashion industry on the brink of liberation, where today it is a celebration of freedom.</p></div><div class="item-desc"><p>Bottega Veneta - There is a transformative gift in the hands of Matthieu Blazy at Bottega Veneta’s Fall 2024 runway, with turning the everyday look into one of picturesque beauty without sacrificing that comfort and simplicity. In oversized T-shirt dresses, well-paired button down shirts, and electric coats, Blazy knows how to tap into the market of effortless chic.</p></div><div class="item-desc"><p>Bottega Veneta - Blazy calls it as it is: “perverse banality.” Something that he executes well in choosing one aspect of comfortable clothing to be exaggerated and highlighted enough for a simple item to be elevated. Is the drama the color? Is it the silhouette? Is it the draping? At Bottega Veneta, it’s everything, everywhere, but not all at once.</p></div><div class="item-desc"><p>Jil Sander - Whereas different fashion houses might capitalize on tangible inspiration, co-creative directors and married couple Luke and Lucie Meier, beg to differ. Perhaps in live performances, eccentric colors and down-to-earth textures, one may find an unexpected level of comfort in the Jil Sander Fall 2024 Collection.</p></div><div class="item-desc"><p>Jil Sander - Aside from the more literal coziness of quilted ponchos and fur coats, there’s a certain je ne sais quoi of seeing familiar garments in multiple and nuanced iterations, in a multitude of colors. It’s as if they knew of the trend of “getting one of every color” for the fashionistas who err on the safe side.
