Of this opportunity, she shared in an Instagram post in 2021: “From that name alone, I knew this was an answer to one of my longings—serving for the greater good and the people. It was about representing countless of less fortunate people—people who are deprived of their own chances and their own voices to call for help. They are people who have stories to tell but can&#x27;t. Let&#x27;s talk about it and help break the stigma,” she wrote on social media. </p><p>Joy is the Region IV-A Head of Y4MH (Youth for Mental Health) Coalition, Inc. She wrote, &quot;In the past years, I thought that helping the less fortunate was only about outreach programs, relief operations, and other forms of aid to vulnerable communities. My idea of reaching out was just being out there and volunteering whenever I find the time, but I found a more effective way to incur a societal difference. I’ve worked with certain organizations and it changed the way I see the whole idea of serving—that it means being part of the change, immersing yourself to the community that you once used to set yourself apart from, and having that perpetual realization that the people you are helping is you, for we mirror our fate by the way we treat others.&quot;</p><p>During the pandemic, Joy also made the most of the online space and maximized her skills in hosting and public speaking. A true nature lover and warrior, she would join tree and coral planting activities, coastal cleanups, Earth Day initiatives, and the like to express her genuine concern for the environment and pursue her purpose of raising awareness about pressing environmental issues. </p><p style="text-align:left">Marrying her mental health awareness advocacy and her commitment to protecting and saving the environment, Joy has found solitude in the sea and fell in love with freediving; she says she likes that it not only improves her mental well-being but also allows her to explore the life under the waters.</p><p style="text-align:left">During Miss Philippines Earth&#x27;s Intelligence Round, Joy was asked about the environmental issue that Bacoor City should address. She answered, &quot;It’s always going to be flooding. But I think, in general terms, in a general umbrella, I think we have to really address the issue when it comes to climate justice. Disaster, actually, disproportionately affects the poor, mostly because the vulnerable communities are part of the marginalized communities, and it’s so unfair that our policymakers, our lawmakers, are not really affected when it comes to disasters. But it’s really the poor that are being affected. So, when it comes to Bacoor, I believe we should actually address the flooding because they are affecting not just the livelihoods of our communities but also the lives of our people. This beauty queen admitted that, during the pandemic—like many people who had to rely on online platforms for essentials and other things—she turned to fast fashion and would often shop online. She later realized that her action ultimately affects the environment. And so, she said, &quot;If I’m willing to give up one thing, I believe that is fast fashion. I think it’s important for us to be conscious when it comes to making decisions that can actually affect our environment. One cloth can actually make thousands of waste in our environment because we are actually producing microfibers—it actually harms our environment. Very comforting, very loving. It perfectly captured the essence of community and made me realize why all along THE community was called as it is. And also the fusion of drag and theater was really what surprised me—a masterful vision, a tour de force!
